The First Amendment

Amendment 1 - Freedom of Religion, Press, Expression. Ratified 12/15/1791. Note

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

What does this say? What does it mean?

I believe that it means exactly what it says: the Government shall not make any one religion the "official" religion of the country like England did, which is one of the main reasons this country was founded. Nor shall it prohibit the free exercise thereof. What that means is that i can put a nativity scene on my front lawn. I can say Merry Christmas. I can read my Bible in public. And I can lead prayer before a football game or a NASCAR race. Amen?
