Taurus X
Taurus X
So the wife and I went car shopping (for her). I tried to talk her into a New Edge, but she fell in love with the Taurus X Wagon.
It's actually pretty cool. All wheel drive, 3 rows of seats, 260hp 6speed Automatic, Leather....
I guess this is built on one of the Volvo platforms? That's what two salesmen have said anyway.
Anyone have any experience with these things???

I've ridden in one before but don't own one. I thought they were pretty nice also. I was impressed. I'm in the same boat as you, the wife's lease will be up in about 4 months and we'll be looking at an EDGE, Taurus X, Flex and if her best friend still works for the Dodge dealer, we'll be checking out their crossover's also. I get X-plan through work, that's really the only reason why we were going to just stick with Ford (well that and I love Ford).
But, should you decide to go the the Taurus X, I'd like to hear what you think once you've had it a while.
I've had both The X and Edge as rental vehicles and hands-down prefer the Edge.
For me the Taurus X seemed to have awkward proportions, massive blind spots, and felt as if you were driving a long cylinder down the highway.
The Edge felt as if the proportions were "right sized" for getting around day-to-day in traffic and it had much better handling characteristics -- especially if there was any kind of a crosswind.
I really wanted to like the X but didn't -- for me the choice would be easy......

Looked at a flex at the dealer a week ago. Well built and looks a lot better in person than pictures. The few things I didn't like is that the doors have a bend towards the car when open... put a foot up there to rest while talking to a neighbor, and you just bent the door... and the seam sealing leaves a lot to be desired when you look at the tailgate body area when the tailgate is open. Other than that.. WOW talk about leg room in the back! I love the interior.
We checked out the new Flex. Seem's like a Practical car, but I'm really not digging the looks. I think it's one of those designs people either Love or Hate...
We test drove the X and the Edge back to back (twice). I like the "sit up" feel of the edge, but the dash is pretty high and the windows are smaller compared to the X. The X IS long, I'm curious to see how it looks in my Garage.
I wasn't sure about the looks either, but the 2008 looks better than the Freestyle. It has a flatter roofline, and boxier, Volvo look. I'm OK with it for a Grocery Getter for the Soccer Mom...
I wish they would have just put a third row in the Edge and it would be a no brainer.
We also drove a GMC Acadia. That thing is Pimp, and if it was for My daily driver we would have probably gone with that, but it was just too big for my wife.
I thought we had the exact car picked out today. Limited, Black Leather interior, DVD Player, But it was 2WD. Dang, I want the AWD for the winter... We've decided to get one, I just need to find the right deal....

Remind me not to let you near my vehicles...

LOL I guess you would have to be up close to know what I mean. Seems like a stupid move to put a big fold on the door the way they did. Just looks to tempting to rest a foot on. That and if your not careful, you could get a corner of the door jammed into your leg. Bad design if you ask me.

I know myself a third row seat was a must have for the kiddies. The kids sat back there every trip for about six months, the back seat was always empty. but you know what?? we folded that seat up about a year and a half ago and have not used it since. It is actually a PITA. I would never get one again unless it was standard.
I've been driving an Edge since April. It's a pretty nice vehicle. I'm glad it doesn't have a third row seat. It's just me and my girl and sometimes stuff, so there is no need for the extra weight of a third row seat.
Speaking of weight, I believe that the Edge is the lighter, more nimble vehicle. I'm not sure I'd call it sporty but it surely isn't bulky like car mags are saying about the Taurus X and Flex. I want to get the most out of that 3.5 and six speed. That's why I went with the FWD. I think that Flex is cool but it's bigger than I need and if it's heavy like the mags say, I don't want that performance defecit. The X is a more mainstream looking vehicle and I believe that performance wasn't thier top priority.
If I had to make a choice today, I'd be looking closely at the Flex. I think after reading what the reviews say and driving them, I'd again end up in the slightly odd looking Edge.
Oh, 20-24mpg in the Edge for me. I don't drive slow, by any stretch of the imagination. I expect it to get better when I've put a few more miles on. I've only got about 3100 right now.
Good luck making your choice. I think that which ever you get, it'll be a good vehicle.
