Interesting that you brought up this subject. Some of my family members and I were discussing this the other day. None of us have diabetes, but we were interested in knowing the initial symptoms. What were your oncoming symptoms? Sorry to take a tangent off the original subject. Thanks for the info, dude. - Og

My wife is diabetic. I have been involved in helping her manage her diabetes since I met her 12 years ago. She got the pump 8 years ago. The pump is a great tool in stabilizing your sugar levels, but it still requires lots of micro-management, ESPECIALLY in the beginning when you first start on it. You might have to check your blood sugar as much as hourly for a while. My wife ended up in a terrible car wreck because of this. She left the house with a BS level of 120, and hit a utility pole an hour later. Her BS was 37. She was OK, but totalled a 3 month old car, lost her license, and had to get doctors to prove she was ok to drive once she came to be more stable (about 6 months later). Since then, she done a good job managing it, and has been more stable than ever.

Symptoms can be hard to catch at first. Most undiagnosed diabetics have persistent high blood sugar, so they don't experience the classic "drunken" symptoms that diabetics get when they haven't eaten enough sugar. A common one is frequent urination. My wife reports a tingling sensation in her arms and legs when her sugar is high, so that might be something to watch for too. If anyone in your family is at risk for diabetes, then the easy thing to do is pick up a testing machine at your local drug store, and test it once a year (or have your family doc do it).

My little sister has been a diabetic for 21 years. She is 30 now. She has used the pump but she doesnt like it very much and stopped using it after a month or two.

When we first discovered she had diabetes my mom thought she had the flu and my sister was drinking fruit punch and other sugary drinks. She ended up in the hospital in a coma for a few days due to her blood sugar being near 800 but she recovered fully.

My dad is a diabetic and he's all messed up now because he never took care of himself. He's insulin dependant and has had diabetes for about 30 years. It runs in our family pretty heavy (his father had it and his father's grandfather had it). I'm in the clear right now but I worry about my son and daughter. My dad found out he had it when he was 31. He's 59 now.

Symptoms - someone covered the constant urination and "drunkeness" state, but also poor eyesight is one and eventually, numbness - usually starts in the toes and bottom of the feet.

I strongly encourage anyone who has diabetes to take care of yourself and listen to your doctors. My Dad just had his foot amputated about 6 months ago and was a very heavy drinker. Well, now he has kidney failure, liver problems and lots of other things wrong with him. Both of his legs are completely numb now also.

I'm not sure what diabetes it is but you guys hear that they found a cure for one of them or both? It's part of the gastric bypass surgery that cures diabetes. My mom had it really bad. She did insulin but got off of it because of what it does to you. She didn't have a pump, just shots though. She ended up getting the gastric bypass done and her diabetes is gone.

It's part of the surgery, not the whole thing. I'll have to talk to her about it.

Type 1 diabetes is an autoimmune disease that results in the permanent destruction of insulin-producing beta cells of the pancreas.

In other words your pancreas stops working and no longer produces insulin to break down sugar. I am trying to figure out how a gastric bypass surgery could fix this. I am thinking that your mother got the surgery and lost weight and therefor got rid of her mild diabetes. There are different forms of diabetes and she probably had the mild form where your pancreas still works but just not as well.

Nope, she wasn't overweight, she just had it done to get rid of the diabetes. I'll have to ask her which one she had but it was pretty bad.

One of my best frineds is Diabetic. He uses shots, about three a day. He has had it for about 9 years now i think.

What made him go to the doctor was, he would drink GALLONS of water a day and just pee it all out and never break his thirst, it lasted about 3 days, went to the doctor and wammy!!

He used to be very cavalier, drink a lot (with me) and generally not do everything he needed to do to take of himself. That since has changed so likewise with the post above, take care of yourselfs!!

type 1 diabetes is the worse of the 2 inwhich the pancreas doesnt produce insulin and insulin shots or the use of an insulin pump are needed. this type is usually hereditary

type 2 diabetes is not as bad and the pancreas still makes a little insulin but not enough. this type can be controled by taking pills. this type can be hereditary but offten is due to being overweight and is more common in older people.

as far as i know there is no cure for either, thump your mom must have just gotten lucky

o and ive been on the pump since i was 14 and been diabetic since i was 5, im 21 now. and i had the usual drinking and peeing ALOT symptom
