I am 250lbs. I don't think many 85hp boats, with six people in it, are going to pull me up very fast on one ski. Hell they put 300hp outboards on little Bass boats just for fishing.

And how much you thin boat insurance is on something like this?
A Maxum is a Bayliner with a better decal job. Do I need to say more?

Learn on an old boat, scratches and dings don’t hurt the value of an older boat near as much as on a new one.
Did not read past this and I will agree Bayliners are junk. Some are very nice looking, but they are cheaply made and fall apart. Stay away from it..

Hey 2Stroked, how good are you with OMC motors? I'm having tach issues on my 1996 150. Do you know much about these?

Wookie,

As much as I'd like to help you, I work for a Mercury / Mercruiser dealer and have never played with OMC stuff. I do remember they had some real serious problems when they went to the new Ficht fuel injection system and it pretty well drove them under. Good OMC outboard guys are hard to come by. I have some friends who know them pretty well up here, but it depends on where your boat is.

Crap, I was hoping you might be able to help. The motor runs great, no problems there. It starts just about as fast as any EFI I have dealt with and will run mid 60s anytime. I think that once I get things tweeked I might be able to hit 70 if things are just perfect. Not too bad for a carbed two stroke.

My tach just quit working and I can't figure out why. It makes it tough to work on the setup if I can't see the RPMs. The local dealer is too proud of his services for me to deal with him. Their quites are typically twice other shops in town. I live in the centeral Arkansas area, do you have any contacts around here?

Wookie, check the wiring going into the control box where the throttle is. The tach is powered from the ignition at that point and has been an issue....at least for the friends that I have that own them. I had the same thing with mine too. If you can make your timing light work with the engine, you can get another 10 degrees of timing but you'll have to run premium. You won't believe the difference. I don't remember the part numbers but you can also upgrade the ignition modules for more HP. They can be made to run. I raced the V-4s for decades and getting 200 HP was easy. Keeping the lower units together wasn't.
