Last winter when I was in San Diego, Walmart was selling 13 watt (60 watt replacement) CFL's for 74 cents apiece. They were being subsidized by San Diego Gas & Electric.

I'm still laughing...

Being a tech-junky, CFL is old.

LED lighting is the way to go.

Reasons:

1. Low energy, even 1/2 that of a CFL.
2. Low pollution (no hazardous waste).
3. Cleaner lighting without that annoying 60 hz flicker CFLs give off.

They're still quite expensive.

I'd expect that their cost will come down into the average consumer's price range within the next several years as manufacturing efficiency improves and economies of scale pick up...not to mention the inevitable off-shore manufacturing.

www.ccrane.com is just one online vendor.

I don,t like the wellow light they produce. Even in standard florecent light bulb you can buy daylight, instead of soft white. THe daylight ones come closer to showing true color ,where as these bulb give off the soft yellow color. They even make the color of paint look different.
I just don't like the soft white.
If you want to save money, keep your cloths dryer lent trap clean and airconditioner filters changed. That will save you more money than these bulbs through out your house.
ALso in the summertime plug the fireplace flu.
fluorescent bulbs do give heat also, It is lost at the internal ballast and not the bulb itself.

You can put your hands on the CF lights though so they are still alot cooler which helps lower AC cost. Of course al these savings are fractional but if we do not do anything it will be much worse.

What doesnt china make? Seriously, I have to laugh at comments about not buying stuff from China when the vast majority of stuff here is made in China. Hell im in electronics retail, and have one customer always in here that always complains about stuff being made in China. Needless to say....he buys nothing at all because he cant find one thing he needs thats not made in China. But yet he is always in hoping something finally isnt.

He's old with too much time on his hands, what ya expect?
