I had mine replaced in 2004, a cadaver donor ACL, never another problem. I run, play soccer, ride my bike 150 miles per week, no ill effects whatsoever.
My guess is Tiger will be back to playing practice golf in three or four months, and if all goes well, back to competitive golf in 6 months or less.
I guess it is different for everyone, but with me I had a Patellar for my first and a Cadaver for my second and the both failed. I as well with no acl played golf, ran and everything else, but in the long run it hurt me because I am now bone on bone and I now need a full knee replacement. I am still in my 30's so I have to wait awhile to do it. You friend may think he is fine now, but in ten years he is going to start to feel the pain when his knee cartilage disappears and his knee becomes bone on bone. It will happen eventually, it took me about 15 years with no acl to go bone on bone and it hurts like hell..

I recall when Tiger broke onto the scene fresh out of college the sports commentators dissected his swing. They pointed out the massive amount of torsion and kinetic energy that he builds on the backswing and the extreme reversed C on his follow through. They said that this was a young golfer's swing because years of swinging like this breaks down the body and forces golfer's out of the game.

This will be Tiger's 3rd procedure on his left knee on 5 years, the 2nd in the past 2 months.

Probably has more to do with your age and activity level. My friend is 50 (he's been without an ACL since his late 20's) and I'm in my 60's. We are both still active between cycling, golf and running, but we have cut back on things like racquetball, basketball, tennis, etc. I found that sports requiring a twisting motion with rapid and excessive force on the knee joint are not completely pain free. I think the reason golf doesn't bother us is because we've learned to play without the massive movement of the knee. (I don't hit 340 yard drives, I try to limit them to 210-260..... ha!)

He will spend an unreal amount of time rehabing and will probably come back just as strong. He will have the best doctors and the best workout and rehab plans.

Was that you at the table over by the bar? Honest, we weren't in there more than an hour..... two beers, honest! I did tweak my knee a bit getting up to go to the Men's room.
