Yes, it's a bad word because it's no longer politically correct. The proper term is "black".

Oh, edit, "caucasion" is fine.

says who? I didn't get the memo. So then I assume they are changing the United Negro college fund to United Black college fund and the NAACP to NAABP? If negro is not ok, then colored can't be either.

I am an equal opportunity offender... I don't care who, or what color you are. If you're Italian, and Wop bothers ya, guess what you are gonna get called? Same if you are Hindu, Muslim, White Trash, Asian, Mexican, Polish, Russian, ect... Oh yeah, I forgot to add gays and lesbos...

I an sick and tired of this nation being a bunch of candy asses. Whats in a NAME? You can call me whatever you like, lay a hand on me, and thats another story. Words DO NOT hurt people. People CHOOSE to let the words affect them. If we as a nation would friggin grow up, and ignore WORDS! Words... How the hell can someone let that affect them... End of rant candy asses.

It's generally accepted as a racial slur.

Negro is a term referring to people of Black African ancestry. Prior to the shift in the lexicon of American and worldwide classification of race and ethnicity in the late 1960s, the appellation was accepted as a normal neutral formal term both by those of African descent as well as non-African blacks. Now it is often considered an ethnic slur[1][2][3]although the term is still used in some contexts for historical reasons such as in the name of the United Negro College Fund [4][5]. "Negro" means "black" in Spanish and Portuguese, and the Italian "nero" is similar (Latin: niger = "black").

Think about it. When was the last time you heard a black person on the news refered to as a Negro? You're correct on the "colored" reference as well. It's not PC. I remember when "non white" was politically correct.

Depending on your profession, you may be able to get away with that, but in MOST cases, you could lose your job.

That's just the way it is man.

My main point was that once again we have a word the "blacks" can use with each other but not-blacks can't.

I don't think that the word negro is all that nice, but they use it?

That's not entirely true either. If I, as a white person, heard a black person using the term "negro", I could take offense to it and lodge a complaint.

I'm speaking in terms of my workplace, which is the government of Ontario.

I've never thought of the word "negro" as being a racial slur, but apparently it is.

Hey Shinesintx.....

I am an equal opportunity offender... I don't care who, or what color you are.
Exactly ! Same here. And fortunately, "I can" get away with it at my work..... because I work with all different races / skin colors, and I make jokes for all of them :-) Especially the Mexican girls (since, in reality, they all know I prefer Mexican girls anyway ;-)

I also think it's hilarious that the guy that runs the conveniance store on the Simpsons, is East Indian :-) .....and BTW, my landlord and his wife, are Fiji Indian.... and my room mate is Mexican.

When I first met my landlord, I said, "Fiji ? Wow ! That's cool ! .....I'm just a plain ol' whiteboy. Nothing special about me. We are just everywhere you freaking look" ;-)

Peace,
Fish

So do I, but that doesn't mean I can get away with it.

You can, as in are physically able to, call people whatever you want but why? I blew up at my mom's friend in a restaurant because he used the word "chinc" Why not just say Chinese? Is it really that much harder? Is two syllables really too difficult for your ignorant brain to handle?
It's not even a race thing so much as an if it bothers just one person why do it? Why purposely and knowingly try to offend someone? I'm sure many Chinese are ok with the word, I'm sure many blacks are ok with Negro, I'm sure many whites are ok with Cracker but why risk offending anyone when you don't have to?

Fish Chris - Was everyone laughing at your joke? Did everyone that did laugh actually mean it or were they laughing just because? I've seen it, and done it myself in the past; watch people laugh at a racist joke just not to stick out then tell me later they were offended.

*The "you" and "your" in this post is not referring to anyone specific.
