By holding the big 3 hostage they have been able to inflate the salaries of non skilled workers to insane rates. Imagine paying someone $35/hr to screw in a screw because if you dont the union will strike and your workers will walk bring your factory to its knees. While times were good and the plants could afford to pay these wages everything was fine, now that the money isnt there due to economic troubles these employees are laid off and cant find new jobs. They have no skills, no education and can't make ends meet off their market value. A market value I might mention that is probably 1/3 of what they were paid. Now work is sent to Mexico because they dont have to deal with the UAW there and more Americans are out of a job because they were selfish. More than half of the homes in Detroit are up for forclosure. They helped the auto workers achieve a great income, but did not prepare them for a slow in the economy. Now that it is here they are jobless and will soon be homeless. In the long run they did much more harm than good not only to the companys but also to the employees

Fair enough. But, can you see that if unions weren't in place, the Big 3 would've royally screwed workers in certain situations. Unskilled and skilled alike. Although some unions could use a major overhaul, just image, for example, what would happen if a worker got fired because Supervisor Joe wanted his little brother to have the worker's job. The union protects as well. - Og

The union has done a great job in fighting for fair labor practices, saftey regulations and the rights of minorities in the work place. All those battles have been faught and won, sadly now more damage than good is done now. Getting let go because the company wants to bring in a family or friend who they feel is a better person for the job is just life. Life isnt fair and no one can protect you from such practices in a place of business.

Agreed. That was just one example of how unions help. It gets much worse. - Og

In the USA we're all Union members. If you hate the Union, get the Hell out!

Stealth I realize you are skilled labor and I realize your field is all union run so you don't have much of a choice. I do not group you with the autoworkers as unskilled overpaid labor, but at the same time I dont agree at all that we are all union members as American citizens. We both know we have gone around and around about this, its probably best we just agree to disagree

I wasn't even talking about unionized labor. In the USA we're citizens of the Union, identical to how a labor union is run.
