General Motors has just released specs for the 2009 Chevrolet Silverado 1500. The half-ton pickup finally receives a new optional 6-speed automatic transmission that improves fuel economy and can be paired with the legacy 5.3-liter and 6.0-liter V-8 engines and newly available 6.2-liter V-8.
The six-speed will initially be available only in crew cab models and will migrate later in the year to regular and extended cab models. It will only be available with a 3.42 rear axle, aimed more at improved fuel economy than towing prowess. For comparison, the 2008 Toyota Tundra only comes with a super short 4.30 rear axle and six-speed transmission.
A crew cab Silverado with a 5.3-liter V-8 and 6-speed transmission will get 14 mpg in the city and 20 mpg on the highway, 1 mpg more on the highway than the 5.3-liter V-8 with a 4-speed automatic. City mileage is identical for both transmissions.
The new 6.2-L V-8 is rated at 403 hp and 417 lb-ft of torque. Those power figures were previously 'restricted' to the Cadillac Escalade and GMC Sierra Denali. The 6.2-L V-8 will only be available with a 3.42 rear axle and towing will be limited to 9,300 lbs. That's an increase of more than 900 lbs over last year's GMC Sierra Denali, which also used a 3.42 rear axle.
4-speed 6.0-L V-8 tow ratings have been improved to 10,600-lbs, from 10,500 lbs , for crew cab two-wheel-drive silverado. Extended cab max towing is up 200 lbs, from 10,500 lbs, to 10,700 lbs 4-speed transmissions will continue to be available with 3.23, 3.42, 3.73 and 4.10 final drive ratios.
As previously announced, the Chevrolet Silverado Hybrid will debut in the fourth quarter of 2008. Our sources tell us that won't be the only Silverado model aimed at saving fuel. We expect Chevrolet will introduce a specially badged 'Fuel Economy' model later in the year with an unusually tall 3.08 or 3.10 rear axle. It will be interesting to see if the Fuel Economy Silverado will tie or beat the 2009 Dodge Ram 1500's expected 23 mpg highway rating.

BTW, how many jobs have they cut lately?
Chevy has a long way to go to win over anyone other than a "loyal" customer, much less to win over foreign car buyers. They have serious problems with past and present union employees. Their health benefits and pension packages from retired employees will lead to their downfall. Chevy will file for bankrupcy at some point and more than likely will be bailed out by the government. It's going to take a lot more than some gearing and engine changes to fix their problems!!
Good for them, it had to be done.
With F150 and Ram getting a much beefier drivetrain, and Toyota already having one, Chevy needed an update. The fuel efficiency will really help sell too.
Chevy is still the #2 truck in my book (much better looking than Dodge or Toyota).

What's so bitch-*** about having a pickup that has the power of a ford edge and can get 20mpg in town driving?

There's no BIG difference, Chevy is just in worse shape than the rest. ALl American car makers are behind the times and have a lot of ground to make up on Foreign car makers. GM spends more money than they make... they are losing money trying to pay the benefits for previous employees.
As typical of Pickuptruck.com, this is old info that was on the streets 6-8 months ago. Comparing the new GM offering with the Toyota is stupid. The new GM won't get close to the Toyota for pulling or for light to light racing. GM has made yet another fatal mistake by limiting the availability of the 6 speed to the 3.42 axle and the 5.3 which will be the most popular power option. Folks with heavy loads to pull will not be happy with the performance and GM will lose even more market share to Ford and Toyota in this truck segment. The Flex Fuel 5.3, which is the best GM engine, will not work with the 6 speed auto and the 3.42 axle- so much for getting the best fuel economy out of available power plants. It's another blunder on the part of the coat and tie morons at GM. If they'd just listen to their engineers.....
