hypermilers an accident waiting to happen?

Check out some of the posts in the fuel economy forums here http://www.cleanmpg.com/
I think it's only a matter of time before some of these people start killing themselves and/or others.
Don't get me wrong. Nothing wrong with driving the speed limit or not burning rubber away from every light but shutting the engine off and coasting, drafting, etc can only be an accident waiting to happen.

I'm still trying to figure out some of their abbreviations. While looking in the sites glossary to see what FAS means I found this:

*VERY dangerous if not done right, possibly illegal*

Draft-Assisted FAS: When approaching a proper point to invoke a FAS, a draft target can be selected to increase the glide distance on the back side of the FAS. You have a speed of 65 mph, a draft target is up ahead doing 57 mph. You invoke FAS and glide into the distance draft, then into the close-in, fall back into the distance, and fall back away into a naked Glide. Pro’s include extending Glide distances significantly thus increasing overall FE (Fuel Economy) if performed properly. Con’s include having to use brakes if you came into the draft target too hot, a close-in draft is dangerous, and the wear issues associated with any FAS (see FAS for details).

Here in western MN where there isn't much traffic I sometimes coast in neutral going down hills and into small towns when I have a tail wind and only if there is no traffic behind me. I don't want to hold up my fellow motorists just because I'm a cheap azz. My last tank on my 07 f150 6 cyl rendered 20.5 mpg. But drafting behind a semi or other large vehicle would be suicidal.

I am actually trying out alot of the ideas i read on the news a few weeks back about hypermiling.

last 1/2 tank of gas i got 139 miles to half a tank, driving my way. filled up with just under 14 gallons so im figuring 10MPG all in town driving, no highway.

using hypermiling ideas this tank ihave just hit the 3/4 tank mark and have already driven 110 miles, again NO HIGHWAY DRIVING. so far the tricks are working...and in a 4x4 V8 no less. so based on that im looking at roughly a 5-6MPG increase with nothing more than a change in driving habits. Imagine if i had Efans and a MPG tune...

all i have been doing though is not accelerating rapidly and always keeping rpms at or below 2000 unless there is a need to go above that. additionaly i have been driving with the OD <<<OFF>>> there are a couple places i can coast but not alot so i don't get to do it much as the drive to work is only about 3 miles. When i do coast i just take my foot off the gas and NOT shift into neutral, as the sudden change CAN cause tranny issues, like it maybe falling out or breaking a valve body. there are train tracks near my house and if i have bad timing the engine gets shut off. Long waits like the wife going into the post office or store the engine gets shut off as well.

Taken to extremes the hypermilers are as unsafe as those driving way too fast for conditions. Maybe the two extremes will take each other out leaving the sane drivers to the roads.
