But either way thanks to all the soliders who did make the sacrifice and to those who were lucky enough to survive it all!

Hear hear!

What most people don't realize is that we lost very few men on that day compared to the other countries fighting on those beaches and other parts of Europe on the same day.

The beaches in Normandie are beautiful by the way, and if ever given a chance, it's very humbling to stand on them, where our grandparents (some great,) fought.

The American cemetary there is also amazing. It's a really nice monument - done right by us with help from the French.

That was back when there were parades and lots of thanks and congratulations when our troops would make it home. Those times are long gone. What kind of parade do you think they'll have in Berkley Ca when our troops come home?? Our troops deserve way better. Thanks to the vets and those currently serving; we appreciate your service!

Do you have a source for the casualty and death totals that day? Of the US, British and Canadian forces leading the assaults on the beaches, I would think the US had the highest casualties as our landing force was about the size of the British and Canadians combined.

I imagine the German casualties were far higher. On an average day, the Russians lost far more people in the War in Europe than any other country, as the Eastern Front was extremely bloody. But I would be surprised if they had more casualties on June 6th, 1944, than the US did.

I can only repeat what I heard today on the radio.. about 5,000 allied troups died that day. Makes the last 5 years seem like a cake walk huh? I am NOT minimizing the losses we have had in Iraq.. just putting it in perspective.
