Lasik/PRK Surgery
In 2 days I go in with glasses and come out without them...hopefully to never wear 'em again.
Anybody out there who has done it? What was it like, and how are your eyes holding up long term?
I can't wait to get a decent pair of sunglasses

Had LASIK done approx 11 yrs ago and haven't regretted it one bit. No problems any worse than I had before the surgery. Had halos and night blindness before the surgery and still have it to some extent. It's nice to get up in the morning and not worry about glasses or contacts!!
I can deal with Halos...been seeing those things for 15 yrs now. I'm mainly worried about a slow degradation that'll put me back into glasses.
wow, I didn't know they were doing that stuff 10+ years ago. Glad to hear

Most eye docs will tell you that glasses are inevitable no matter how good your vision is. As you age at some point you will more than likely need reading glasses. Usually 50+ is the start of this, but not a rule. Needing reading glasses is better than needing glasses all the time. You can still snow ski, water ski, run, bike, etc without fogging up or breaking glasses or losing a contact.
I also did mine about 10 years ago. Probably the single best use of my hard earned money ever. I still see 20/20. I was 20/600 before. Blind as a bat, basically.
For me, it's more difficult to read small print in low light, but it is easily fixed by turning the lights up. I figure I will eventually use reading glasses sooner than I would have without the Lasix (maybe 5 years sooner?), but I've got a ways to go still (I'm 46). When I get really tired, my night vision is not as good, but it does not cause any issues. Those have been the only long term 'problems'.
I did have some halos and discomfort when attempting to night drive shortly after the surgery, but it was 100% gone within 3 weeks. Trust me, it would suck to have that not go away. They have to tell you about that risk, but my eyes (and everyone I know who has had it done) were fine within a short time.

I would love to have it done but am honestly a little scared of it. My doc said I would be perfect for it, he said to stay away from PRK though. He told me that at worst I would have to use reading glasses in 20+ years.
I had Lasik done 8 years ago and no problems. Just like you I couldn't wait to go buy a pair of real sun glasses. First pair was Maui Jims and I've been hooked on them since.
I will say this though. Although it was painless, it was the MOST intense 20 minutes of my life. No need for details, you'll have your own story in two days.
I wouldn't hesitate to do it again though.
Good luck

thanks guys
I'm doing the PRK method since the Military is doing the surgery. For the work I do, LASIK is actually a more dangerous choice.
Hey Nettershakes, they still use razors

i was thinking about it but my doctor said dont bother. i have a little bit of a hard time seeing distance but i can get by without wearing my glasses most of the time amd my prescription hasnt changed in 10 years so.. a lady i work with had it done and she said they only gurantee it for 5 years i guess in some cases the eye can go back to the way it was???
Yikes. I thought they started using lazers or am i Just WAYYYYY out of the loop.
there is this jig that holds a razor like a wood plane....the razor slides across the top of your cornea and slices a minute little flap...they fold this flap back and then the laser does it's thing
PRK uses what is essentially a dremil bit to grind away that bit of cornea instead of cutting a flap...then a laser is used
