I've riden for over 30 years now (2 incidences knock on asphalt).
I try to teach others that your in a box when riding, when speeding your leaving the box, when "stunting" you leave the box. You leave the box, you'll end up in a box.
You ride in your lane just like you do in a car, in the left side. When approaching another get to the side that the others in at. Example, Your left lane , car right, get to the right of your lane so they see you in side mirror. Visa versa. I don't care what anyone says...NO CENTER LANE!!.
Your blind, on grease and debrie (nails, staples, glass, Etc).
Mirrors on bikes. I cannot believe how some people have thier mirrors. How the hell can you tell what's coming behind you.
Your right mirror should show all behind you and some of the right. The left mirror should show you what's in the lane to your left and none of the back. This is because you will must likely be on a 2 lane road. In the city ALWAYS turn your head to verify either lane. Don't dwell, just a quick snap shot, don't trust your mirrors.
I can go on but the last thing, and this just kills me, 2 or more CAR lengths distance between you and the car in front. Sure they will try and cut you off and change lanes on you. But you have that distance to work with.
Some one close behind. Wave back and point 2 fingers and tap the brake. They figure it out very quickly.
I had a Lady yesterday that changed off on me but I had the time to move from the right to the left of the lane , slow down slow enough that the car behind me was'nt having to lock it up to avoid me.
Change over to the lane she just changed from, pull along side and show her my appreciation of her decision AND watch the Cop 2 cars back in the center lane light her up for changing lanes with out signaling.
Your a mouse at a mouse trap. Don't stick your head in it.

I am tempted to get another bike but those statistics and my own experiences are weighing against it. Man I used to love riding.
