Batteries = POISON!!!!!!!
I guess we'll see which is the more prevalent mode or transport if and when gas does reach $10 per gallon.

Battery technology is evolving and has made great strides over the last few years.

I lucked out I guess. I have a job where when I fill up my tank I can save my receipt and turn it in as an expense and I get reinbursed the following week. I never put more than $20 out of my own pocket into my truck.

Batteries = recyclable and are just as bad as the one in your truck. I will grant you that there are more of them in the hybrids but they are still recyclable.

I'm not talking about ethanol either, that isn't the answer. Ethanol has other problems, like getting its raw materials directly from our food supply, and the fact that it requires ALOT of fossil fuel to make it. You need to run the machines to harvest the raw materials, diesel to transport those materials, etc etc.

Besides, we have plenty of oil to our north to cover the US if the crap really hit the fan.

One of your politicians said that the US didn't want to buy our "dirty oil".

Big Picture

kevinr
all though people feel green about the hybrid system, the fact of the matter is that manufacturing hybrid vehicles leaves a carbon foot print substantially larger than that of any non-hybrid vehicle. Additionally the land surrounding nickel mines and mines of the like is usually completely uninhabitable for up to 20 SQUARE MILES!

Norm
Recycling is a valid point, but to recycle batteries specifically requires a tremendous amount of non-recoup able energy, unlike regular landfill waste (including tires) that can be recycled and through the process generate electricity for the grid.

To All
We have seen how the media and politicians alike lead us astray when it comes to the support of various technologies, including transportation.
In the 70s GM convinced us we needed catalytic converters.
Al Gore and his lobbyists are all for ethanol and hybrids.

Europe has given us a diesel v6 that has 207 hp and 400ft.lbs. of torque at 1400 RPM! (Mercedes) This diesel is as clean as its V6 gas burning cousin.
European Hybrid Fuel Cell vehicles will be sold in late 2010.
New ZERO NOX gasification plants using a 5th of the space of conventional waste burning plants can now burn ALL wastes including medical and biological waste, produce only inert ash as waste which can be used in agricultural applications or as an aggregate for concrete that makes it super strong. CO and CO2 emissions are under 22 parts per million, less than half the southern California mandate. These plants are capable of creating synthetic, sulfur free diesel, syn-gas and 90 octane gasoline. ALL FROM OUR WASTE.

My point is that by investing in a battery/gas hybrid, we are perpetuating an inferior technology. Batteries, while being full of potential, are still not what they could be.

I work in the rail industry, these things can haul crazy amounts, so 250 wouldn't surprise me. I'll see if I can find a more exact number...

Just saw a CSX ad where they're claiming to move 1 ton 423 miles on 1 gallon of fuel.
