Motorcycle License...

My little brother bought an '07 Honda CBR 600rr. He went to a class to do some training and it takes care of the driving part of his License. He has got to go this week to do the written part and will then have his license. Anywyay, my question is do you have a grace period or anything like that to get your motorcycle license? He was pulled over last night and given a ticket for no license. But, you do not get a learner's permit or anything to drive it and get familiar with the bike before he would have to go take his driven part of the test, so how does that work?

Here in Wisconsin, once you pass the written test they give you a learner's permit, which allows you to ride during the day and that permit is good for 6 months.
I cant believe that he wasnt supposed to ride the bike at all, I mean, if he cant ride the bike and practice with it, how is he supposed to pass the riding test?
I would check with the D.O.T. in your state and make sure, because that ticket sounds like a BS deal to me...

Ga is the same way as Wisconsin. Most of the motorcyclists on our roads don't have motorcycle license.

your brother is doing things bass ackwards and will now have to suffer the consequences of his ignorance. to legally ride your motorcycle (asuming registration and insurance is current and valid) most states have you buy a temp packet first . then you take that to a testing station, once you pass the writen test they sign off on your temp packet and you are legal to ride with restrictions(diferent in every state). then you take the driving part of the test or complete the riders saftey course. then you can get your full motocycle endorsement

I have not ridden a bike for a few years now & my wife does not want that to change! But I would say that IMHO thats a bit of a fast machine for a "novice rider" assuming that he is one. I started on a smaller machine and worked my way up to some pretty fast machines, there is no substitute for experience especially when you take your life into your hands.

ALL states have some provision for motorcyclists to receive a learning permit. In California, you have to take a written motorcycle test (approximately 50 questions) and also take another motor vehicle test. At this point, you are issued a permit that is good for one year from date of issuance, with the folowing provisions:

No passengers
No riding on the freeway
No riding after dark

If your brother FAILED to take the appropriate measures to get a permit, then that's his fault. He deserves the ticket, IMHO as does every other unlicensed "motorcyclist" on the road.

He should be lucky they didnt take his bike away too, IMO.

AZ is the same way written test = permit no nights, no passengers, no highway and you have to take the driving test withen 6 months. and yes that seem like alot of bike for a newbie.

The written test will only get him a permit. The best thing for a novice is to skip the road test at the DMV. They way he should obtain his license is buy taking the MSF course. If he passes this course they will give him a certificate to take to the dmv. This certificate serves the same purpose as a road test. If he has passed the written test at the dmv and he passes the MSF course he gets his license. The reason I say this is the best way is b/c the MSF course is usually 3 days and he will learn a hell of alot. Trust me. Im crazy enough that I ride everday here in NYC. Below is a pic of my baby.

In Missouri a new rider is able to take the written test and get a learners permit good for six months with a couple of restrictions; no riding after dark & no passengers.

Then you have a couple of options for the riding part of the test. You can either take the driving course given by the state or like the others you can take an Motorcycle Safety Foundation beginning riders course and take in certificate saying you passed and then you can get a full license.

As an officer in my local Harley Owners Group I would also suggest that he take the advanced riders course also given by MSF. It is a great course for new riders and those who have been riding for years. As an officer my chapter requires that I take the course every year.

In kansas, if you dont have your restricted motorcycle permit, or full motorcycle permit, you cannot ride the bike on public roads. Most people go to parking lots to practice the stuff you will have to do in the riding test, which is what they tell you to do.

He did it backwards. You have to go take the written tests and what goes along with it (vision, etc.), then he can get a permit - good for 6 months and may only ride under the supervision of a licensed rider 21 or older. THEN he takes the classes and the riding test to get a full license.

Google arkansas motorcycle instruction permit.

I got mine in Arkansas as well. Once you pass the written part, they give you a permit with restrictions like everyone else was saying. He should not have been riding around places where he could have gotten caught until he took his written test and passed it(the easiest test I've ever taken).

By the way, do you know a Justin Myers from Beebe?

A CBR600RR sounds like a good way to get a new rider killed.
