I was able to quit a 2 pack a day habit over 13 years ago by simply putting the money I spent on smokes into an empty Marlboro carton and seeing how much freaking money I had at the end of a month!! 13 years ago, it was only around $20 a carton.. I see that they are over $50 now...
What I did in between NOT buying smokes was pick the freaking butts I still had laying around and smoking them... Lets just say, smoking old butts is the nastiest thing you can do and will put you off of ever wanting to smoke again... Besides that, it also opened my eyes to what kind of addiction I had, and for me to be picking up my own old butts and smoking them was an eye opener!
I went thru the usual pangs of emotions during this time and while I didn't think I was "that bad", my wife said I was an "***" for about a month or two.... But, she knew that I was getting over an addiction and that's why she put up with me for the first couple of months... Yes, it takes months to get over the urge, and for me, smoking old butts helped me stop all together..
I didn't use any gimmick or pay anyone to help me... Just the love of my wife and the fact that I was saving over $120 a month at the time was a big deal for me.. (I was only bringing home about $1000 a month at that time, so smoking was costing me 25% of what my rent was at the time!).... Actually, if I were on the same 2 pack a day habit today (@$50 carton) that would be 30% of what my house MORTAGE is a month!!
It still took many years to overcome the urge when I even smelled second hand smoke!! Today, cigarette smoke is pretty offensive to me and while I'm not one to say anything to anyone who still does smoke around me, and I can tell someone is a 'smoker' in an instant of them walking past me... They just plain stink of old cigarette smoke... No matter if they haven't lit up for over an hour or more.. My wife told me I used to smell that way all the time, but I didn't believe her because I didn't smell it at all...
That's the other thing that will come back to you.. Your sense of smell and taste... Things just smell and taste so much better once you get that stuff out of your system...
It's great now and the urges have completely stopped and I only smoked for six or seven years before I quit! It only took me a day to get hooked on the things...
Good luck to you and I hope you make it this time!!

What coincidence that you are quitting too. I decided that today was my last day of smoking too.
I quit in Oct 2006 and started again around Sept. 2007. I know a very dumb *** move. The first time I used Chantix and it helped out a lot but was tearing up my stomach. I tried to take it again this time but it seems to tearing my stomach even more so the hell with it I'll quit on my own.
Mitch everything you said is correct. my now wife always complains that I smell and I never thought it was that bad until after I quit and could smell the other people that smoke, damn do smokers stink

Just get pissed off at them and put em down. After 4 days you're over the worst of the cravings. After that take it a day at a time. No big deal then. I did it cold turkey and so did my wife at the same time. Amazingly we didn't kill each other.
thats part of the problem last time i tried my wife tried to quit also and we were so at each others throats that after awhile we just went back to it i guess the biggest good that happened is that i quit just long enough to cut way down previously it was 2 1/2 packs a day this time i was only up to a pack a day so it may go better this time
Btw my wife told me she wasnt ready to quit so i put the ashtray on the porch next to the chair she got the point

way to go everyone!
I tried to start smoking LOL but I couldn't stand the taste. I really enjoy a good cigar but I don't inhale it.
You can always do the uncle buck method...you know:
Cigarettes
Cigars
Pipes
Chewing Tobacco
and then those little pieces of gum.........
If you didn't get it (child of the 80s here) Uncle Buck is John Candy.

OK sorry to say but either you make the choice to quit and do so, or you simply keep fooling yourself into thinking you want to quit. Common problem with many that try to quit. They simply try and do not convince themselves that they ARE quitting and NOT wanting to quit.
Not trying to be an *** but it is the cold hard fact.
However i do also have some suggestions. I stopped smoking about 15 years ago.
You have several issues you need to over come.
First is the addiction to the nicotine iteslf which is as bad or worse than heroin. First thing is You seriously need to make the choice and decide if you truly want to quit. Once you have done that half the battle is won.
Next do the patch again as that will help curb the craving for the nicotine. Next and this is what i did .
The hand to mouth is a motion that you are use to and also part of the habit/addiction. Go by yourself some Tootsie Roll Tootsie Pops and carry them with you every where. These will be your new cigarette for the physical part of the addiction. Every time you have the craving pull one out and suck on it.
After about 4 weeks you should have it kicked that is the hardest part the first 4 weeks.
Good Luck you can do it if you truly want to.
