Sure, right now we would have lots of allies in a World War with nukes a flying.

But China will avoid that kind of war. Economic war and regional control is more their thing. China has strong trade ties with many countries, including ones with large populations and strong militaries (Indonesia for example). Not just in Asia, but South and Central America, too. Africa also, FWIW. Not only will those countries continue to rely on China for cheap goods that they can't make themselves, but China will also be able to buy products as they get stronger economically.

So when we are down and China gets stronger, they will tell us that they are re-uniting with Taiwan by a certain date, say 2030. Now we have a pact to defend Taiwan, but are we really going to start WW3 over it? Probably not. Are countries in Europe going to want to nuke Beijing over Taiwan? Nope. After we let them have Taiwan, they point out our word ain't squat, and use it against us with countries that are on the fence.

BTW, when you were listing countries and allies you left out India. and Russia, too. Those are pretty big players in Asia. India and Russia both have lots of reasons to oppose China, but they may well join her if it was a military or economic battle against the USA. Just like we allied with the USSR in WWII, war and politics makes for some creative alliances.

IMO, they will just let us weaken ourselves from within economically for the next few decades.

Man you guys are depressing. Just because we are in an economic slump it doesn't mean the US is going down hill. This has happened before and we got through it. Economies go up and down. We are just in a down time. It will get better people. You guys make the US sound like its dieing and will never recover and we are going to speak chinese in about 20 years. Have some faith in your country people!!!! Where is our patriotism? It isn't the end of the world!!!!

Actually, I am pretty optimistic and very patriotic.

It is true that we are losing some of our prestige and clout, but our economy is still expanding.

But due to freedoms guaranteed by our Constitution, our great military men and women, and our abundant natural resources, we are going to be all right.

But China is a looming threat and I refuse to bury my head in the sand just because they can't yet kick our ***.

Bottom line is they are increasing their strength and influence, and there is little we can do to stop it. As long as their interests are generally similar to ours, there will not be direct confrontation.

My real annoyance is that we voluntariliy burden our economy with legislation and stupid policies, while our economic competitors are able to compete without such restrictions. That is what allows them to close the gap on us, and hastens the day when we have to tolerate things we wish we didn't.
