Window just busted!

About an hour ago my father and I were coming back from John Deere getting some parts and the passenger side window just busted! It sounded like a shotgun going off, glass got all over me and all in the truck. Has anyone had anything like this happen to them before? This is the first time i've ever heard of something like this happening. I started checking myself to make sure I hadn't been shot Definatly not a way to start the day lol

Wow is right, I've never seen that happen before. Maybe a BB gun or 22 cal, in either case, I would check further for someone shooting at you. That glass is pretty stout, cant image it just disintegrating on it's own.

There would have to be an exit hole or damage somewhere else then. Due to the nature of car windows, center punches will break them into a million pieces with one punch. Something could have caused an effect like that on the window. Be it a bullet or something else. Not sure but I would check the truck for any damage to the truck such as an exit hole or maybe damage inside the cab IF it was a bullet. That would be scary to know but at least check into it.

That could cause something like the center punch effect if it had a sharp tip on the rock and caused the right frequency in the glass. It's possible

This happened to the back window on a friend's SUV. The dealer said it was due to temperature changes.

There is a name for it, and I can't think of it at the moment... but it is a known instance. It doesn't happen to often, but when it does, it's loud, like a shotgun.

Thermal Shock might be the term you are looking for... but I doubt that air alone could do it. If you vehicle was out in the sun on a really really hot day, and then you went to wash it and hosed it with cold water, that might do it. But just a change in air temperature is not really enough.

The only time I've heard about this is when people are shooting. Watch the news in the area for more reports. And I'd report it to the police in case others start to report the same thing happening.

Were any of your other windows open? Or were they all closed? If they were all closed, there would have to be either an exit hole or a bullet somewhere in your vehicle if it was indeed shot out.

I had this happen to me in a old 1978 GMC pickup.

It was a very hot day around 95-100. The truck was sitting in the sun all day with the windows rolled up. I got in and shut the door pretty hard causing the rear window to explode with a loud pop. That's the only time I've ever heard or saw anything like you're talking about.

A pellet gun could easily have been the cause. Not powerful enough to go through the glass, and there is no way you could tell if the glass had a bullseye in it as it is designed to break into small pieces when broken.

I'm almost positive it wasn't a bullet or a rock that made it break. My side of the truck was next to a ditch and a rail road track. As soon as it happened we pulled over and checked everything out and there weren't any other holes. We drove across the railroad tracks and look to see if we could see any vehicles but there was no sign of anything and no dust flying where someone had been driving. And it couldn't have been caused from extreme temp. It's been in the high 70's during the day and at night mid 60's. I guess this was just a freak accident.
