How much can our tailgates hold?

The 'brain fart' thread got me thinking....with our tailgates down, how much weight can they hold? The other night at rugby practice, I had my tailgate down while taping my ankles and a few minutes later I look up and theres 4 guys sitting/resting on it. 3 of them were a solid 225-250. I was like

Anyone know how much our tailgates can support? (the older series, mines a 98)

They can hold more than what you should be stressing them with. But my 01 has if I remember either 2 or 4 circles flat in the rib of my ford bed liner. I assume its for "beverages" to sit right on. So I assume at least 300-400 lbs is what it is rated at.

I bet though, it could hold 1000 give or take. It rest mostly on the cables and 2 hinges it pivots on. Unless one of those components gives way, I dont see the sheet metal giving in being it seems to be thicker and "doubled" up at the tailgate.

I have an 05, but I'm tipping the scales at 240 plus and two friends are 280 and 230. When I'm not forgetting to close the tailgate, it has always held our weight at the same time without a problem.

Me 340, dad 310, uncle 275 for a grand total of 925! so......yeah they will hold a lot. I was freaking out because I just knew one of the cables was going to break and me tailgate would get dented but It held. I won't be doing it again lol

I've had a pallet of sod sit on my F-150 tailgate before. I think it weighed about 1200lbs...

The tailgate itself could probably support 1000 lbs, the straps that support the gate however, are good for around 500 lbs.
