Dude there's a ton to do there. I always stay in Old town I really like it there. Old town Hacienda suites is where I usually stay, great local and reasonably priced. I've never stayed on the beach there so I couldn't tell you whats good or bad.
San diego zoo is great, seaworld is fun, harbor district, you name it bro you'll have a blast. I know a few members on here are from there so hopefully they'll chime in with some insider stuff
We usually stay just opposite of old town in hotel circle. Old town is a good place, plenty of shopping and eating. Stop at ohungrys for a yard of beer too!
Hotel Del Coronado is on the beach but that could possibly blow the 2K away alone
like said before, San Diego Zoo is fun......and HUGE, sea world is cool, Coronado island is nice to drive and walk around, old town, La Jolla is just north and nice. Sea port Village is cool too.

San Diego has the best public transit I've experienced.
Their trams go everywhere you want to be.
Spend the car money on your wife.

Baseball fan? Hit up a game at Petco - it's a beautiful stadium. Padres are in town from the 23rd through the 27th.
Public transportation is excellent, but you still need a car for flexibility.
Make sure you go down to OB and have a burger at Hodad's. Hint - a single is PLENTY, trying to handle a double gets VERY messy.
Lots of casinos out there (all Indian-run) - but some are no-alcohol if that matters. I like Barona - and that one is no-alcohol.
