new truck

Hey guys, this is my first post here.

I just bought an 06 F-150 yesterday. It's my first truck ever, first vehicle, actually. So I figured I'd join the message board 'just in case' I needed help with anything truck related. Here's a few pics. It's the plain jane XL.

I belong to a Ford family so it only made sense to go with the Blue oval. My mom drives the Focus wagon, it's okay but it's got nothing on Dad's F-350 (V10, 5 speed, 3:73 posi).

It's a 4.2L V6, 2WD... 3.55 Limited Slip, with the 5 speed, which I haven't seen much at all in this newer body style... are they rare (the 5 spd)? Why didn't they mate the 5 speed with the V8 engines? I kinda wanted a small V8, either a 4.8L GM or a 4.6L Ford, but it had to be a 5 speed. I settled with a 4.2L hoping there would a range of products for it. I noticed they are expensive. JBA headers are something like 600 dollars, which seems overpriced considering you get 2 less header tubes, 2 less flanges, a smaller collector, and the whole product uses less metal than a v8 header... so what's the price difference for? even the K&N air box is like 350 bucks.. why is V6 performance so expensive?

For future modifications, I think I'm just going to go cheap (moderately cheap) and mostly aesthetic, little bit of chrome wouldn't hurt, some nice wheels and tires, a billet grille, maybe take off the F-150 logo on the side for a smoother look. (I've noticed some trucks on the street where the black text in the logo has worn off, it looks terrible). It needs a good buffing, and a thorough cleaning.

Another thing I was wondering about is the suspension. It comes with the trailering package, and an aftermarket trailer brake. Is there anyway I can level the rear end with the front end so the truck sits more level with the ground? The ol' *** up high in the air always made me cringe.

anyways, I've been browsing the site a little bit and I'll stick around, lots of good stuff to read here and some of your rides are amazing, I'm definitely thinking about how I can apply some of things you guys have done to my ride.

See ya around.

The 07 my friend and I roadied down the coast to get him last fall looks just like that. Exactly like that. He wanted an automatic, but not for $4000 more than the truck he got.

He added Expedition 17" wheels, I believe. I'm not sure if he got his cruise control swapped in yet. Amazing...swap in the working buttons and get the cruise function turned on in the computer. We both thought that tidbit was neat.

Stickshifters are being phased out. Enjoy this one. Demand, build cost, profit margin, emissions...they all might figure in somehow, but the direction is to automatics.

They dropped the manual option on the 4.6 after the 03 model year, the 5.4 never had a manual in the F-150, only the Super Dutys. Both the manual and the 4.2 are going bye bye for 09.

The single best thing you can do to juice up your truck would be a set of 4.10 gears.
