General Gun Discussion

I thought I'd make this thread to let some folks here talk about guns without having to make a new thread.

What guns are you looking to get? What do you own already? Pics?

I just got myself a Smith & Wesson Sigma 9mm. I got it from a friend at work for 240 dollars. I can't wait to get my second part of the income tax to get an HK USP .40 Compact. Tomorrow theres going to be a local gun show so I'll be sure to stop by there and check out what they got. Maybe I can pick up some ammo for cheap.

faulkincanyon 03-28-2008 11:17 PM

Ive got several guns but the newest is the springfield xd .40...if anyone on here is in the market for a handgun I highly recommend the springfield xd's...wanted a glock but after researching I decided on the xd and glad I did..easy to field strip..smooth shooting..and just looks bad ass...good gun:thumbsup:

faulkincanyon 03-28-2008 11:28 PM

dont get me wrong glocks are bad ass in the fact that they can basically withstand any abuse given and fire basically any ammo you load..but for the feel your right the xd feels more natural in your hand

FoMoCoFan17 03-28-2008 11:36 PM

New sig.

alomar 03-28-2008 11:41 PM

Dont got my XD yet, but the one I shot I loved it way more than the Glocks.

First, I need a bigger safe. Then, I'm definately gonna be looking at the Remmy 870. prolly with the pistol grip and an 18 or 20 inch barrel. I have also been hoping to get a 44 mag for camping, and for fun at the range, but I'm not sure which of these two I want:

S&W 629, 5" barrel
http://i164.photobucket.com/albums/u...0357/SW629.jpg

Ruger Redhawk, 5 1/2" barrel
http://i164.photobucket.com/albums/u...57/Redhawk.jpg

I'm open for suggestions, as they are not available for rent around here.

1muddytruck,

Take a long look at the revolvers you posted. They are both very fine firearms. Excellent workmanship, and one of them would probably be great for you.

Notice though, the very different angle of the grips. The Smith is much more ah... upright than the Ruger. Most likely, one will fit your hand while the other will not be as comfortable. You really need to hold both of them, feel which one points more naturally, comes to aim quicker and easier *for you*!

That's the one you want to buy. Stay with that brand and you'll do fine. That's the brand for You!

If I had all the dollars I spent buying one of those brand's guns, and selling them because my hand does not like the configuration.... Fine firearm, just doesn't fit me.

I owned a Redhawk 44 mag in the past. Its a top notch firearm, but I'm going to suggest the S&W. 44 mag has alot of recoil and of course you feel all of it in your shooting hand. It doesn't take long shooting the Redhawk and your hand starts to go numb. The rubber grips on the S&W don't punish your hand nearly as much. Take a look at the Taurus revolvers as well.

We still have 2 Redhawks in 357 mag, very fun weapons to shoot since they don't punish your hand as much.

Tumba 03-29-2008 10:44 AM

Is there a good handgun that can be concealed in the back pocket and still stop em in their tracks.?

I'm getting older, not as strong, I'd rather just bust em one and get it overwith:lol:

But seriously is there a pistol to fit that need.?

tardman91 03-29-2008 10:53 AM

I have a Taurus PT 24/7 .40 S&W. It's a really nice gun and is very comfortable to hold. It's very reliable and the price can't be beat.

CRF250rider1000 03-29-2008 11:24 AM

Also looking at this but can't decide to go pistol grip or not:confused: Any suggestions on that?

What is a good locking gun rack that I can put on the ceiling to secure my shotgun? I looked at pro gard and they are like $300 for an electronic locking one that claims "there is no drilling," but I also read somewhere that for trucks I would have to drill? Anyways just looking for something cheaper maybe that will keep the shotgun secure so no one can just grab it out of my truck.

Just a couple of comments from an old retired law enforcement firearms instructor. Try out as many different handguns, rifles, shotguns, as you can. It's the personal fit and feel in your hand that makes a big difference. I have my personal preferences, but what I like, may not be what you like. And the old saying goes, you can't hit anything with a gun that you can't control. Sure a .44 Mag roars like a lion and kicks like a mule, but can you handle it, can you get off more then one controlled shot? Repeated hits to the target with a controllable .22 has much better results that repeated misses with a .44.
.357 or .40 are both good handgun rounds. Rifle.....Ruger Mini 14 gives a good bang for the buck. Can't go wrong with your shotgun pick of an 870.

Any suggestions on the pros and cons of a pistol grip folding stock vs regular stock? I'm a first time buyer so not exactly sure what I am looking for yet.
Just thought this was cool I ran across it earlier today.

Like I saw a guy shooting bags of garbage to see what would happen. It was quite funny.

He shot a garbage bag full of kitchen trash with a shotgun from like 10 feet away, and it literally blew it up from the spread...

Regulator54 03-29-2008 03:07 PM

A shotgun is a shoulder weapon and should be used and mounted to your shoulder accordingly. The pistol grip full length stock is fine, but I would stay away from the pistol grip without any stock or the flimsy folding stocks. They have their purpose but I have seen countless trainees on the firing range who approached targets on a walkdown course with the shotgun at their hip, "Terminator style", who totally missed an upright man-sized target because their gun and eyes weren't on the same plane. Keep it mounted to your shoulder at the "low ready" and you will hit what you are pointing at. That's what the shoulder full length stock is for.

BalogUK 03-29-2008 03:23 PM

my order is in for the new Springfield Armory XD-45 ACP 4" Compact, Bi-Tone (stainless slide, black frame)... now if Springfield would hurry up and ship to the distributors already!!!

pgh_medic 03-29-2008 03:26 PM

I currently have a Sig P226 in .40 and LOVE it. The only problem is im a little guy, 5'11'' and 165#s soaking wet, so I have a hard time concealing it....

I recently was at a gun show and checked out some of the Kahr's there. I have big hands, hence why I love the feel of the Sig, and the Kahr was a small gun, but felt good in my hand.

They seemed to be a decently priced gun, and definately fit the bill for concealment purposes.

I am going to try and find a place to test one out before I buy. Does anyone have any experience with one of these? I want one in .40, I have NO intentions of ever buying a 9mm.

Also, does nybody have any recommendations on concealed carry holsters? It feels most comfortable for me to carry it in the small of my back, plus with warmer weather coming its easier to hide under a shirt. Any links to any sites selling them would be a big help!

Thanks!

Yea I just liked the fact that the folding stock made it easier to store/transport. I would never think of getting one without the stock:lol: I was mainly looking at this one http://www.budsgunshop.com/catalog/images/52857.jpg

A good plastic folder if not too bad for transportation purposes only. Just make sure you open it before you use it. Never get one of the skeletonized metal folders, they just split cheeks open with the recoil.

Medic man......IWB, inside the waistband, holsters work good for concealed in warm weather. Stay away from middle of back, you end up with problems in drawing the gun when everything goes sideways. All the big manufacturers have a good selection, Safariland, Bianchi, etc. You can go exotic and custom made, but they are expensive, have a lengthy waiting list, and are primarily used by the well heeled professional gunslingers.

CRF250rider1000 03-29-2008 03:55 PM

I'm thinking of a 44" Pelican case to store the shotgun. That way if I want I should have room to put a handgun in their when I turn 21.
I may use it for air travel sometimes. That is why I am looking into a quality case to protect my investments. Also they are water resistant, locking, and have rollers, which makes it easy to transport:thumbsup:
http://www.midwayusa.com/eproductpag...761&t=11082005

Do you guys keep ammo in your cases? Seems like it would be nice to have everything in one box. Maybe a little compartment running along the case in the front that holds a lot of ammo. For example where the white space is

Different rules for different jurisdictions. Gun and ammo together in one place is good, in another it's not. Airlines are really picky about firearms. Check their regulations before you attempt to fly with one in your luggage. Any quality, hardsided, preferably aluminum, locking gun case is worth its price.

There are definately some small guns that fit into the "pocket" category. Seecamp makes arguably the best quality .380 pocket gun money can buy. If you don't mind waiting 18 months for it, you can get a new one for around $750. Ruger just released their new pocket .380 called the LCP. It's a really hot seller right now, and goes for under $300. Personally, I'm not ready to trust a caliber that small, so my "pocket gun" is my new Smith and Wesson Airweight .357. It won't deliver the .357 round at its maximum potential velocity because of the very short barrel, but it's still superior to the sub-caliber mouseguns as far as stopping power goes.

here's a pic to give you an idea of size:
http://i164.photobucket.com/albums/u...7/inhand-1.jpg

Also, you mentioned carrying in your back pocket. I strongly urge you to consider a holster no matter what method of carry you use. There are lots of pocket holsters, as well as IWB (inside waist band) holsters that are ideal for the little guns.

Get the Walter PPK it's a .380 and it's tiny but has a nice heavy feel. It's a sweet looking gun. James Bond style.

I have one. Its a good carry weapon once its "broke in". It takes alot of rounds to get this thing broke in, but once it is It is very reliable. It feels great in my hands, but for some reason it seems to feel like it kicks harder than my kimber 1911. After shooting my PPK, I'll have red marks on the top of my hand between my thumb and trigger finger. It just seems to pinch there, and as such I don't shoot it very often. I'm thinking about getting rid of it actually. Again, the advice of shoot as many as you can before buying comes into play.

TexEdition 03-29-2008 11:05 PM

Galco makes some very nice holsters for whatever application you need, and affordable.

For the very best CCW holsters you should try Milt Sparks. The Summer Special is what I use for my Springfield .45, it's an inside the waistband holster and it's as comfortable as any such design can be. Extemely high quality. It does cost a bit more but will last a lifetime and is excellently designed.

As far as "pocket-pistols", if it's something you'd truly like to carry in your pocket then I'd look at what CRF said. The Scandium S&W .357, tho I'd load it with 158 LSWCHP +P .38 loads.
That thing only weighs about 12 oz. and all reports I've read say shooting full power .357 loads are just brutal.

:beers:

It's really not that bad. Mine is the 340M&P, which has the Scandium frame, but a stainless cylinder. So it weighs 13.3 OZ. The PD model has a titanium cylinder, so it's an ounce lighter. I dunno if that extra ounce makes a difference in recoil, but I was pleasantly surprised when I shot mine with .357 loads. I shot blazer 158gr in 357, as well as my carry ammo, which are 125 gr Speer GDHP (Gold Dots). On my last trip, I shot a full box of 357 blazers with no ill effect. Don't get me wrong - it kicks like Chuck Norris, but it's controllable, and it comes back down for follow up shots very quickly. On just my second trip with it, I was able to put 2 shots on target faster than my P7, which weighs 3 times as much.

hydeph 03-30-2008 09:32 AM

you have a lot of guns, considering you only have two hands to use them with.

Do you really need all those guns to protect yourself? you could easily have a deathmatch in your front yard with all your buddies with that kind of armoury.

 Welcome to the site! Way to dive right in with a profoundly stupid post. :coffee: Since you are a young buck (just bought your first vehicle, so I'll go out on a limb and assume you're a youngin), I'll entertain your silly question this time:

How many is alot? I'd say when they don't fit in my safe anymore, then that is enough. Then I'll buy a bigger safe, at which time I won't have enough anymore. If called upon to protect myself or my family, then the one that I have on me at that time will be the one that shall be tasked with the job. If I ever need all of them, then either zombies have risen up, or the Commies invaded, in which case, I can only hope I have enough ammo.

Firearms are for protection first and foremost, but an afternoon shooting them at the range is good clean fun. Try it if you haven't. You might get the bug too ;)
