I believe it is 18 across the nation and 21 to purchase a handgun. If you are planing on hunting deer with this rifle a 17 hmr will do nothing more than have the deer laughing at you. I would not recommend anything smaller than a 243 win. Its on the smaller side of the deer cal. but my family has harvested deer with this cal. I personally shoot a 300 wsm. Which is over kill for just deer, but i go on hunting trips and wanted a good all around rifle. I hope this helps. Oh by the way the 17 hmr's will do a number on varmit tho very accurate. Still a little small for coyote.

Please, take a hunter's education course first. They will answer your questions and you'll learn important info.

Thanks.

It's 18 for a long gun 21 for a handgun. Hunter's education is required if you were born after September 2, 1971. You can't legally hunt deer with any rimfire rifle in Texas. You'll need a centerfire.

LOL i hunt deer with my grandpa's .308 winchester. I hear you on the overkill!!
I think he used to hunt moose with it in the UP of michigan.

In all reality, Tonka, supercrew is right. A .243 has plenty of power for a deer. If you want to get closer to the comfort zone, I would recommend a .270 winchester which is a great all around gun with plenty of knockdown power.

A .17 would be a GREAT gun if your planning on hunting varmints. But for deer, I agree with the others-- .243 and up.

My grandpa says it sounds like a damn cannon going off every time i shoot it! But I am building an ar10 in 308 so that will be my next deer/plinker gun.

I wouldn't mind nabbing a Mossberg 100ATR in .270, they get pretty good reviews and are not too bad on the wallet either. Only thing I really need is a reason, I can only hunt deer for a late doe season in my state with a rifle, otherwise it is shotgun or muzzleloader (which you can also use in that season)
