NC State doesn't offer an automotive engineering program, you'd have to go into the mechanical engineering program (my degree is in Mechanical Engineering) and get involved with the automotive clubs like Wolfpack Motor Sports (http://clubs.ncsu.edu/motorsports/).
As RKrough said, nothing wrong with a tech school, but if you can get into a 4 year program you'll have more options available to you once you graduate, and be able to go further faster in your career.
Don't forget, the chicks at NC State are probably alot hotter than the ones at the NASCAR tech school, and there are alot more of them. Plus you can tailgate at the football games, get drunk at frat parties, stay up all night "studying" for your morning exam with the chick who lives next door and her roommate, go on a random road trip to the beach with your new friends, or work out, swim, play basketball, racquetball, tennis, or whatever at the massive and newly remodeled gym... I could go on if you'd like...

Ha, i got a 1010 on the old scale, finished it in about half the time as most and played tetris on my calculator while I was waiting. Funny thing is, took an IQ test at the same age, scored a 126 (top 16%) Intelligence doesn't always match tests
Hey NCSU what high school did you go to? I went to leesville from 95-97. I have two cousins that graduated NCSU, ond of which was on the wrestling team. (he's a county comissioner now, imagine that)

Did you know a guy named Ryan Kirk? He transfered to Leesville in '95 I think. He was a tall, lanky, kinda dorky kid who played basketball...

Mechanical Engineering deals with, well, all things mechanical. To start you'll take a fair amount of math classes, intro chem, physics, english, econ, the kinda stuff everyone takes pretty much regardless of what major they are.
ME's start to differentiate from the other engineering programs towards the end of your 2nd year. You'll start learning more about materials (the way they behave under various loads), thermodynamics and heat transfer (this covers heating/cooling systems and introduces the theory behind engines), solid mechanics (gears, levers, pulleys, etc)...
It can be pretty cool stuff if you can get in the right mindset, but it's definitely not easy. You'll make friends in your classes, and alot of the work is done in groups now. I've seen some guys get through the classes when they obviously wouldn't to able on their own, but with the group's help they end up passing.
With a degree in ME you can get a job pretty much anywhere, as long as a machine is involved somehow. Alot go into automotive work, some work for factories keeping machines working, or figuring out ways to make them work better.

I wouldn't feel bad about it, most people at Ravenscroft were rich, spoiled d-bags. Other than that it's a great school
