Problem with Mr Monte

Hi Guys,
Sorry for starting a thread unrealated to ford but i am completely stumped with this.

My wife has a Monte Carlo 1998 3.6l and upon putting the key in you get all the regular stuff happen ie door chime ect, however when you turn the key to drive its like the power stops and so the car fails to turn over.

The car has been sat for about 3 monthes and the battery had gone completely dead, i replaced the battery and she started it up but then the gauges moved eraticaly and it died straight away.

After this i could not start the car again untill i used my other key in which case it started fine and continued to run as normal, at this point i drove around a little and washed the car ect.

now when i try to start it up it dose not even turn over.

it is like the car gets power untill you turn the key to drive then nothing at all, could this be a problem with the ignition not picking up the chip in the key?

i dont understand why it started once if it was the starter ect.
