Dog people...look inside.
Dog people...look inside.
I am in the market for a dog and have a question for everyone. I am very interested in getting a pit bull, however, the numerous Ohio laws make it somewhat hard to have a "vicious dog." Most people who are uneducated would believe that pit bulls are truly a "vicious dog," but if you know about dogs, you know that they are actually good-natured, loyal, affectionate and obedient if trained and socialized properly.
With that said, I was wondering if anyone could recommend any dogs that look very similar to the pit bull, but aren't labeled as "vicious." I am looking for a dog that has a brick-like head, short hair and medium sized, like a pit bull.
Thanks everyone

A boxer is probably as close as you're going to come. They are great dogs, my relatives use to breed them. Appearance wise, I can't think of anything else that would closer resemble a pibull.
Ok, thanks guys, but Jack Russell's and Yellow Labs don't look like pit bulls.Anyone have input on my question? hah

Tough to find something that looks like a pitbull but isn't one...
How about a Bull terrier? I know it really doesn't look like a pitbull, but they are damn cool dogs:

Unfortunately, nothing matches a pure-bred (like mine!):

Syrus (nickname Bubba), is a pure-bred from Rhode Island (They breed them BIG down there!
I also have a blonde female, no pictures of her on the computer right now though.

Do ya need for your dog to look like a pit for machismo purposes?
Not many dogs out there look like pits.
I have heard all the stories about the dogs and I personally have never had any problems. Now I have never had a pure pitbull. I have a pitbull/Aussi cattledog mix and a pitbull/mastiff mix and they are a couple of the most obidiant and friendly dogs with my family.

I beg to differ. I had a rotty for 11 years---sweetest big girl in the world. very gentle and very obedient. I now own four labs---these four remind me of her---sweet and gentle dispositions.
BTW---Rottweilers were not originally bred to be guard dogs or attack dogs; they were bred to pull meatwagons through towns.
Here is what the AKC says:The Rottweiler is basically a calm, confident and courageous dog with a self-assured aloofness that does not lend itself to immediate and indiscriminate friendships. A Rottweiler is self-confident and responds quietly and with a wait-and-see attitude to influences in his environment. He has an inherent desire to protect home and family, and is an intelligent dog of extreme hardness and adaptability with a strong willingness to work, making him especially suited as a companion, guardian and general all-purpose dog.
