I've tested it out in different situations, for instance:

Drove into a parking lot with about 1ft of unplowed snow to do some 2-wheel 180s, ect. At the end of the spins... I was completely stuck. Reverse, forward, nothing happening. Some people were laughing at me, until I popped it into 4wd and drove away with a big smile on my face.

Just remember, guys - 4wd only helps you go, it doesnt do squat to help you stop or steer..................

I've seen my share of 4wd's in the ditches too. In bad weather, doesn't matter how many driven wheels you have, it's slow and steady that wins the race.

Spoken by a guy without 4wd....I know I said this as well before I got a 4wd truck. Hell I've seen our 8wd vehicles as well as our tracked vehicles go off the road.
It's the other 99% of the time they are able to function while the others are stuck that I am concerned about.

I will never have another 2wd truck-I don't need weight in the back now, I don't really need wither tires and there are many other good things...The best is-I don't spin trying to get going at a stop sign or stop light like I used to in the winter....

I have two 4x4's and wouldn't have it any other way. But over half the vehicles I see in the ditch are either AWD or 4x4. I can only assume people get overconfident and do not realize that 4x4 only minimally helps steering and braking, while giving the feelgood impression of having all around more control when accelerating, which is really the only thing 4x4 improves. 4x4 is a great thing, but if you let it go to your head you will be in the ditch too.

For all you guys talking crap about 4x4's... just realize that it makes your 4x2's look even that much worse. I would always rather have more tires pulling than not. I mean it's an advantage, not a disadvantage having more tires pulling!!

Yeah, but it seems to me it is the 4x4 guys trying to do the speed limit with 12" of snow on the ground that get into the most trouble. Overconfidence is what gets them in trouble.

If you take your time 4x4 is a valuable asset, abuse the fact that you have it and it will bite you in the butt.

The only thing we see here in Phoenix is a mist of rain and blowing dust. Never have had a need for 4X4. I would love to have one, but I have no need for one. If I lived in Flagstaff where they actually get snow, yeah I would have one.

Dig the post...

Last week, we got snow in North Texas. I was about 2 hours from home when the storm hit. 4x4 helped me get home safely. Do I really need it? Dunno, but it sure was nice passing people stuck in the median. I asked a buddy if I should have helped anyone...He said "people that do stupid sh*t in their cars, need to pay for what they have done". Figured that was a good point.

A good point, over confidence is a weakness.

I have seen tanks get stuck by over confident drivers so anything can get stuck. If you use a little common sense and drive to your limits, a 4x4 can be a great thing.

I have used mine many times just to get going from stop signs and lights instead of spinning... The one draw back is having to carry around the extra weight of the front dif all summer....

I like my truck. I never needed 4wd until I got stationed in kansas. I cant say I actually needed it, but the security of it. Believe me, I have had a few times of drive/reverse .. drive/reverse/drive floor it! to get out of some sitch-e-ations, but never a real need. The only time I need it, because I was being an a-hole. I went into a construction site after it rained. Friggin mud was up to my hubs at times. I had my wife drive will I pushed, dug, push, dug. Took us like 2 hours to move 50 yards to dry land. I was covered in mud. But honestly would 4wd helped that much. Even they get stuck. I've seem hummers. F/LMTVS, and even some of our tracked bradleys get stuck in mud. Driving in snow/mud/etc also takes skill.

4WD however can make all the difference, there is no doubt in that. I wont deny it. But then again, when you live in a state with fair weather, I prefer my 8.0 sec 0-60 stock than my 10 sec 0-60 stock. I prefer my oil changes cheaper. Fluid changes cheaper. There are benefits to both. Less to go wrong and break.

I still want one. I will on my next truck.
