5 Foot Diamond Back
5 Foot Diamond Back
Yesterday out on the property my boss and i killed a 5 Foot Diamond Back. He is about 3inches wide. He was a big sucker. I have never seen such a big snake in the wild. We were out ridin around the pasture in a Kawasaki Mule and a fellow riding around the woods told us he was headed our way. The guns were back at the house. I used a big 4x4 sign post to kill him. I was mad cause his head got messed up along with his rattles getting busted. I will get better pictures once i get the skin mounted up. This skin is surely goin up on the wall.

Sweet man! That is a nice sized rattler. I love catching snakes of all kinds but I usually just let them go afterwards. I was nailed once by a cotton mouth - you wanna talk about expensive, that antidote is not cheap! The bite was pretty painful, felt about like a wasp sting magnified by 10.
I shoot about a 7 footer about 12 years ago ( when I was 14 or 15) in my parents front yard with a 12 guage. I just got home from duck hunting and my brothers friend was leaving and saw it cross the driveway. I picked up with a pich fork and it was hanging about 3 feet off both sides with its head missing, Three shots at point blank with BB load took a little chunk out of it.
BTW my parents live in neighborhood about hour south fo jax, fl. they have one of the three home with 2 acres and the rest have around one acre. Pretty well developed neighborhood with kids and dogs.

I nearly stepped on a timber rattler, while walking a trout stream in Southwest Virginia, when I was 18. That bad boy was 6 ft. long and almost as big around as my forearm. (My forearms are about 14 inches, just to give you an idea of how big that is.) It's head was 4 fingers wide. It was kind of cold that morning; or, I would probably have been bitten. Had we not killed it, I would have sworn it was even bigger. Scared the crap out of me.
The only good snake is a dead snake, in the spring when I'm mowing the field, I see them slithering through the tall grass, so I'll run them over with the mower deck running on the John Deere,& watch them come out the chute in bloody pieces, or I'll slam the front end loader blade on them & crush them, or cut them in two!......I really hate snakes ya think!....

A 5 footer you say? That makes him a little Chester. Chesters are the ones capable of hitting you in the chest. A 5 footer just gets him in the name. To be a big Chester, you're talking 7+ feet. He should make a pretty mount. Any plans to Bar-B-Q him? They are good eatin'.

That's a nice sized rattler, but they get a helluva lot bigger..
My cousin was bitten above the ankle by a 6 footer in the front yard of the old house we used to share. I had one that measured 6'3" strike at me on the front porch in December(!) of '90.. I think the only reason it didn't get through my jacket was that it was sluggish, sunning itself on the woodpile.
Rattlesnakes are fascinating critters.. not truly aggressive, they'll only usually strike if stepped on (like my cousin did), or when surprised (like I did).
The few copperheads I've run across, on the other hand, are downright mean. They don't get very big but make up for it in pissed off.. lol.. scary snakes, I hate those things much more than rattlesnakes..

Please do not let anyone know what state you are from. In some states the diamondback is a protected species. I am not by any means a "tree hugger" and would have probably killed it also. Just a word of warning.
Here is a recipe if ya ever find another...

Backwoods Bound wants to remind everyone that rattlesnakes can be dangerous and caution should be used. Be sure to check with your state conservation departments about the rules governing rattlesnakes. In some states they are protected and killing one could land you in big trouble.

I leave 'em alone unless they're somewhere they could bite people or pets. Then, of course, they must die.
