I replaced my 7800GT with a XFX8800GT and it's a solid card at a decent price.

If you do graphics work, get an ATI, it does CMYK a lot better than Nvidia. What's your video card budget?

Also agree the 8800GT. Not the GTS or GTX. GT is rated better with video, where GTS/GTX is better for gaming.

heh good luck, im pickin out new fans, PSU, and vid card right now. Over the past month my mind has spun in so many directions, even if i have learned a lot about pcs i sure have done my share of going crazy.

Im gettin a corsair 550w PSU, an nvidia 9600GT , and some new fans. the 9600GT will be your best bang for your buck card. It's coming out on the 19th. Only gonna be around 150-170, and its going to outperform the 8800 GS (?) and stay around the level of the 8800 GTs

see i'm working on a fixed budget (which means buying the stuff off ebay so my wife doesn't know how much i spend )

basically i'm looking to build a powerful little machine that HOPEFULLY i'll never get to use to its full potential, because if i do i need to get out the house more often

ok so the 8800gt should fit into my system pretty good. what about ram? i shouldn't really NEED 8 gb right? i mean that just sounds silly to me...

I still say ATI/AMD is better in the graphics end of the spectrum, folks. This is a place where you can save considerable money, if you don't game a $100 card is plenty for graphics and video work - look at a Radeon HD 2600XT. If you do game, this has the same power as a 8600GT.

4gb of ram is more than enough, if you want more you have to use a 64 bit operating system. I'd get a 4gb (2x2) dual channel kit.
