Brewing beer

Ok got a Mr beer kit a while back and just felt I didnt get much for the money. Wasnt too impressed with any part of it and the beer was tolerable at best. Im not looking to make this into a huge hobby, just something to kill some free time. My price range for a kit is around 100-160. What are thoughts on this kit?

Or would something like this be better?

I've never had a good tasting home brewed beer. Dad used to make beer in the basement and it was awful....

This would be better than the Mr. Beer. I read up on brewing a while back & I think ale can be done at room temperature, other types require 40-50 degrees & would require some sort of refrigeration. The main ingredient is cleanliness, if you don't constantly clean everything you'll ruin the beer (it will taste bad, or be undrinkable). I'd get a brewing book first, look at one of the first two listed here:

With the type of kit in your 2nd url you'll need to buy beer making ingredients & something to put it in (bottles or kegs). The ale ingredients and bottles where listed at the bottom of your 2nd URL. If you bottle you'll need a place for it to sit undisturbed for several weeks (if I remember correctly around 30 days). Get a book first, before you buy another kit.

A book is a great idea, I will stop by sometime this week and pick one up at the local nerd hangout

Is there any placearound you where you can go a brew beer? We have several great places around us. You might go and ask them which onethey would use.

I brew beer, but it is a place that is called the Brew Kettle---that is all they do.

Yes, as long as you tell UPS/Fedex/USPS that it needs to be shipped with a signature of a 21 or older person by proof of drivers license or such.

They do it all the time with mail order wines, beer, liquor...

I think Alton Brown of Good Eats on the Food Network did one of his shows on brewing beer. You may be able to find a copy online or email food network and get a copy. His shows are usually pretty informative.

As for me, I think I would be better off just going to the liquor store and picking up whatever interested me at the time.
