I'll second everyone on the Ranger. I used to live in Olive Branch (and Horn Lake) and drove a '93 Ranger just about everywhere there is to go in Memphis. Where are you driving that you are racking up the miles? Unless I was headed to Beale Street, I'd stay in G'town/Cordova. They just completed construction of the Best Buy and that new movie theater down at the intersection of Winchester and Riverdale when I was living in OB. I drove through that area a couple summers ago... let me tell ya, I was happy to leave.

Is Bogey's in Cordova still there? I worked for the company that supplied their arcade games.

Im at ut-martin in college and on the weekends everyone goes to nashville or knoxville or somewhere else and my truck racks up miles driving these place (i get gas money), but my truck gets miles and i come to memphis occasionally, but i just want a little car i can drive around town. ya i tend to stay away from winchester. i think bogeys closed down, they have some fun park or something open (atleast it was a year ago).

what's the point getting a Ranger if you already have an F150?

Go with a low mileage compact car for commuting and the F150 will address your other needs.

you know... that does sorta make sense. I just never looked back after getting out of the little Nissan Pulsar I had when I got my first Ranger. For me, the point would be having a truck bed to haul something if necessary. But I guess if you had the time to drive across town, get the truck, drive back, load up, drive home... ok.

Yeah... only reason I was on Winchester in the first place was I picked up my wife at the airport and she wanted to see where I lived in OB. So instead of heading east on 78, we came over to that end of G'town to head into OB. Ironically, the ex gf still lives in the same apartment. Good thing she wasn't outside. How in the heck do you explain why your driving through her apartment complex??

As to the second more fuel efficient car/truck thing... I will say this. My first vehicle was a '82 Subaru Brat. If I could have any vehicle along with my F-150, I would be hard pressed to make a decision between that Brat and my '93 Ranger.

I would love to get another older Ranger for a beater, just a 4 cylinder 5-speed truck. Stupid simple to work on, if a deer or anything else were to bounce off of it body parts are super common and cheap. I also have a ton of spare parts from my '85 (I have most of a 1986 Ranger for parts stashed away) to find a use for.

Even Bronco II would be fun to have just to rip around in, something that might have a hope of seating four real people (unlike my scab F-150) and would still bump 20mpg on the highway, and would get better than my 10ish my other trucks get in town.

When you are shopping for a gas saver, you have to remember to factor in insurance and registration, it would be hard to justify another vehicle just for lowering fuel expenses if it is going to cost several hundred (or more) dollars to insure and put tags on per year.

A little car to drive around town that is reliable and gets good gas mileage for 5k? Not too difficult, just about any 4 banger Toyota or Honda would fit that bill if you can find one that has less than 200k on the clock.

Other things to look at which don't hold their resale as much (getting you a newer vehicle with less miles on it) - Subaru, Ford Contour or Focus, Neon. Don't care for GM stuff like the Cavalier - those are real ****boxes.
