Upgrading Trucks, dare I go Chevy?
Upgrading Trucks, dare I go Chevy?
I want an honest opinion from yall on the 05/06 Chevys, I wanted to ask here first as I am more likely to get the nitty gritty on the Bowties.
Just to be fair, I am also looking at the 05/06 Fords, (my preference), but my uncle is the new car manager at a local chev dealer, and can get me one hell of a deal on a certified chev. and treat me right on my trade.
I know about some of the downfalls of the fords (plugs breaking, cam followers, etc). Does anyone know what kind of things to look out for in the Chevys?
Please no responses saying Chevy sucks or anthing like that, i want factual information to help in my decision.
Thanks
Josh

depends, what kind of truck configuration are you looking for? the 08 Silverados in 2 door short bed go for low 20 grand. I recommend you look at a used 07, late needs to be moved out 07, or an 08, instead of an 05,06. Chevys are really priced reasonably in these new models and are much better than the previous models. Fords are great, and prob wont have many problems unless you get a truck that was beat to **** but covered in makeup to hide it. If you have an uncle like you say in the car business that works for chevy, you should probably go for chevy cuz you will get a much better deal. Good luck

Problem with going to the Chevy forums is that they (much like here) are so biased towards their brand that it make it difficult to get the nitty gritty on the truck.
I cannot afford the new bodystyle Chev so the 07 trucks are out.
Basically I am trying to stay in the $17,000 to $20,000 range and at or less than 40,000 miles.
4x4 extended cab, nothing too fancy (don't need the lariat or whatever the high end chev is) as most have pretty good standard features on the midrange trucks
I am certainly considering waiting for my uncle to take a Ford in on trade, basically he will be wholesaling the truck directly to me, so either ford or Chev I should be able to get a fair deal on, but I will likely be able to find a nicer Chev (features wise) than a ford. One of the main reasons I am considering the Chev is that the extended cab is roomier on the Chev, (I no longer want a supercrew in any flavor, I need a larger box)
Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Truth About Trucks!
Go into www.fordvehicles.com & click on Truth About Trucks! You will find your answer there!.............
My brother was given an 08 Silverado extended cab 4x4 for his work truck, he didn't buy it. He drives ranches all day so the truck takes a beating. He has had no issues with it other than a broken windshield which isn't GMs fault. He gets around 21-22 mpg hiway and about 12-14 pasture driving. He has the 5.3 Flex Fuel with an automatic. I don't know what gears he has but it will blow the doors off of a 5.4 Triton and do it with authority if having a quick truck is important to you. The front axles on these trucks are known to eat seals(4x4 only), the intake manifold gaskets are prone to leak and cause coolant in the oil, there are issues with the automatics and the A/C still has problems with the pressure switches. Brakes are drum rear, not disc anymore. Brake life is not long on these trucks. His has normal hiway tires and I swear you can stick the thing on dirty asphalt. I've pulled him out of sandy places with my 2 wheel drive SCrew that he couldn't get out of in 4 wheel with a locking rear axle. The interior of the truck, to me, leaves a lot to be desired. The radio and some of the controls are apparently not designed for the driver to use. Sit in one, you'll see what I mean. I considered one until he got one. While my 04 SCrew hasn't been to my liking, it isn't the pain his GM is. Far too many LITTLE things that would drive me crazier if I had to drive it all day every day.
Depends what you are using the truck for.
I contract and have worked for a enviromental Eng firm, dealing with coal mines and oil field work. It involves alot of off road, Halling and highway miles.
highway Chevy, Toyota
Towing Dogde
The toughest over all you see every where is the FORD. So I make this my personal truck.
Chevy is very comfortable to drive, however sucks in every other aspect. You never never see them on a mine in this rugged area.
Just what will you be using this trck for?

Well the situation I am in now is that I am driving abou 36,000miles a year, I bought my current Screw with 92,000 on it and in 13 months, I am now at 128,000 miles, I have 4 yrs left of paying on this thing and will never be ahead of the ball, I am trying to correct this somewhat by getting into a low milage truck.
I use my truck for Commercial and residential maintenance (ladders, some equipment, light loads of building materials and A LOT of commuting miles), as this is what I do for a living.
Otherwise, my personal use is Hungting, Fishing, General outdoors. (haul 2 wheelers, 18-20ft fiberglass boat, Ice fishing equipment, Jet skis, etc) I don't mud or do heavy off roading, but must perform well on trails, logging roads, gravel pits, etc.
Again, the draw to the chev is mostly because of my uncle (Chev dealer manager) He will be able to put me into a truck that will last at least slightly longer than my loan term!!!If I try to trade up to a newer ford (at some other dealership, I won't be getting the financial headstart I would be getting through my uncle, and may very well be back in this same perdicament (truck worth far less than the current loan is for)The other draw to the Chev is the better fuel mileage.
I do all my own maintenance, so when I hear of things like the 3v spark problems, it gets me a bit nervous, so I am looking to see if the Chev has any "achilies tendons" that run along those lines.
I REALLY like my screw, but with the floor board supports and rocker area starting to rot out, and starting to need some heavier maintenance (ball joints, Belt, pullies, Brakes all round exhaust manifolds and Cat converters, etc) the money I spend there could get me into a newer truck, the other thing I really want to get away from is the Crew cab, I would like to have a 6.5' box, and fords extended cab is smaller than i'd like, the Chev is pretty roomy.

I understand what your talking about. With the connections at your dealer that you have you can get a better deal on a Chevy. If it was me though I would try to wait for a good used Ford to get traded in. My superviser bought an 06 Chevy Z71 brand new at 38,000 miles the tranny went out. His girlfriend drove the truck 90% of the time. Another guy I work with bought an 05 Chevy Z71 brand new and at 65,000 miles he is having to get a brand new motor put in his truck. But he's pretty hard on a vehicle so you can't blame Chevy for that one lol. My dad has a 1999 F150 2wd which I drove for two years it has 144,000 miles on it and all that has ever been replaced was the EGR valve besides normal wear items. My first truck was a 1999 Ranger 4x4 3.0 V6 and it was put through hell before I purchased it and I kept it for two years had a 135,000 miles on it when I traded it in on my 04 f150 I had to replace the water pump and alternator and the Ranger. What i'm mainly trying to say is that not all trucks are Bullet proof. Everyone has different likings to what appeals to them most from each manufacturer. Alot of people on here are dissapointed with the power that the 5.4 puts out but in my opinion it has plenty and my cousin's 5.3 with a prgrammer and intake can barely outrun my truck stock. My 2wd crew cab 5.4 averages 15.7 Mpg and my cousins crew cab 2wd 5.3 averages 16.2 Mpg so I really don't see where the better MPG comes in from Chevy. Oh and by the way if you need the room of a crew cab then you can get it with the 6.5' bed. Theirs my two dollars lol
