an one have replacement windows put in
me and my wife are wanting to have new windows put in our house. is there a better time of year to have them put in as far as price. anything i should know? any brands not to get? i have 18 windows any idea what price range im looking at?
You first need to decide what type. You need to decide if you want the fiberglass or plastic, the aluminum or even wood. Then, do you want double hung or single. Had mine replaced, 32 of them. It is a nasty job that should be done when the weather is good. Lots of dust.

Take the time to get many quotes, even 10 is not unreasonable.
There's so many people who do these jobs and the prices swing wildly all over the map.
I remember shopping around for 2 sets of patio doors, the prices started at $2,300 installed (for both,) all the way up to $10,400 (for both)
... and everything inbetween.
Find someone who has been in business for a long time.
Run a check at your local BBB to see if there are any complaints logged, and ask for references and call the people up.
Have you ever heard of bid sheets before?
I havnt until I was reading a bunch of stuff at
www.askthebuilder.com
I actually bought his "Roof" bid sheet, and it saved me a ton.
He has bid sheets available for just about everything.
If I had the window one, I would email it to you.
https://secure.askthebuilder.com/pro...eet-58-8.htmld sheets for windows too:
Anyway, good luck and take your time. The industry is full of a lot of useless people who only want to take your money, so just go slow and be careful.

Windows
We replaced all ours with Double hung, Low e, argon gas windows that ran about $250.00 each installed plus a vinyl wrap which added a little more. It was the best investment we made. Our house faces the north and they really helped keeping out that cold north wind.
we called someone out for a price about two years ago. they wanted $20,000 for 18 windows. i told him i was not buying a new car i was buying windows and get the hell out of my house. i am just trying to find out everything i need to know before i call somebody out. is there a slow time of year that i may get a better price

In late '06 we had windows and siding done. We called a couple places that advertised in our area. These places wanted about 30 grand for just the siding.
We bought a fixer upper. Investing a ton of money into this house would be a waste. I ended up hireing my cousin who is a small time remodeling contractor in the area. He charged us 14-5 for windows and siding. I think we have 12 windows. We got the cheap ones. Vinyl, insulated glass. Typical, no frills windows. They do a fine job of keeping our heating bills reasonable.
If you have a fancy home I think you can plan to spend 4-5 hundred a window. You can get cheaper, but as with anything you get what you paid for. On our old house, the cheap windows were a huge improvement over the ones that were installed in 1925, when the house was built.
Good luck!

Do your homework and it can save you a bundle of money. We got our windows done by Window World last year, they are a national franchise type outfit. They sales guy wasn't at all pushy, was to the point and showed us the product, answered our questions, and went over the details.
The window type we picked was the exact unit someone else had quoted us on. Even worse, the other person that had given us a quote was someone I had made signs for, and had always given a fair price.
Window World did it for less than half the other price. I had already priced buying the exact same windows and installing them myself. Even with a contractors discount for my personal price, the big place had so much buying power with their quantities that I only paid about $20 each over my cost for the windows.
But for that $20, they included installation.
Windows really aren't very hard to install yourself, so if you have more time than money pick them up and do them. After the first couple it's not bad at all.

We just had new windows put in last spring. We had about 13 or 14 or them, top quality and they are all casements except for 2 (in each of the kids rooms). There were a couple of double windows in there.
i was quoted over $10,500 from Home Depot. I thinl I actually laughed out loud when he told me the cost. HD actually contracts their windows out to a 3rd party. I could just see how much of a hassle that would be if anything was to go wrong.
We went with a local company that manufactures, installs and warrants them lifetime... Total cost (because there was a builders show up the road so they offered a discount for that) and we paid cash, I think total bill was $5,400... Took them 3 days to do.
Whatever you do, get references. Also, any of the big name companies will be more expensive. Out here it's Anderson, Wallside, HD, Lowes, etc... Some of the smaller shops will provew their windows are just as good and with the ecomony right now, you probably have some bargining room with them.

I bought ThermalGuard. They are triple pane, argon filled, and they have an anti UV coating. They came out beautiful. I got 1 bay window, 1 sliding glass door, 1 front door (Vinyl clad steel with steel frame), and 21 windows (18 double hung, 2 awning style, and 1 double casement). Total price for the job was $18k. This was several years ago though. Not sure if they would cost more now. Like others said, get as many quotes as you can, and remember that a warranty is only good as long as the business still exists...
