In los angeles, LAPD starts you off at 54,475 (HS), 56,668 (60units or more), and 58,881(degree) while you are in the academy. plus a step increase when you complete 6months and another after a year. LASD is a little bit higher than that... like 61k w/ a degree. i know a lot of officers making 100k+ with OT.
Thats nothing when a 3/2 house costs $800,000. 58k in LA is like making 15k in dallas. The fact is cops don't make good money. You might make OK money if you've been a cop for 20-30 years but even then it isnt anything compared to a corporate job. I don't think cops become cops for the money anyway. A lot of them like the power trip.

My teacher retired about 8 years ago when he was making that much. Not quite sure how much he would be making now. and if the other figure is a real figure or a ballpark estimate..

first thing... very few cops that work in LA live in LA! most live outside city or county lines... something like that is around 500K. i still think that the money is pretty good.. most private sector jobs do pay more... but do you really wanna be locked down in an office... it maybe safe but its not for everyone. just like teachers dont become teachers for the money. i am in law enforcement, but not a police officer... and i make more than my sister that is a teacher (she has a masters).

If you really want to end up federal, I would get a 4 yr degree in something other than CJ. CJ is a useless degree and is too directed. Go for Psych, Soc, or management. They will hire someone just as fast with one of those degrees then with a CJ degree, plus you are more diverse. Then get some LE expierence.

I went the Military Police route (active duty) and the border patrol, ATF, DEA, Marshalls, etc would do military recruitments all the time. I was never interested and ended up going the municipal route. Pays good (in midwest), benifits and retirement are AWESOME, and I get to retire at age 53.
If I could go back and start all over, I would be sitting in a Fire Station getting paid to grill out and wash my truck "after 1700hrs".

If you want to go Federal, go to a good 4 year college and get your accounting degree. This is THE degree they look for. A criminal justice degree will be useless unless you want to do local (city or county). The above link will tell you what the FBI looks for, let me warn you , if you have too much fun in college....the FBI is out - they ploygraph.

I know that the FBI polygraphs very extensively. I have also been told you can't have a tat to be in FBI (im out on that one). Thats why im looking into DEA, Secret Service, US Marshalls or something along the federal route!
