Johnny Depp
Tom Hanks
Sean Connery
John Wayne
Jimmy Stewart
Paul Newman

not much for any of the new guys, there's to much drama advertised everyday in their lives for my taste.

Seems only male film actors (and mostly americans at that) are on this list, with no regard paid to genre, .

In keeping with the crowd and sticking to film, in no particular order I would say:

Marlon Brando
Johnny Depp
Kevin Spacey
Cary Grant
Anthony Hopkins
Spencer Tracy
Laurence Olivier
Peter O'Toole
Kevin Kline
Orson Welles
Peter Sellers
Jimmy Stewart
Peter Finch
Robert Duvall
Russell Crowe

and this off the top of my head. There surely are many more, especially when you consider actors outside of film.

There are many great actors, more than mentioned here, and the list would be longer if you consider actors who gave amazing performances in a role or two that was perfect for them. The above represent, in my mind, those who consistently deliver great performances over many roles.

The Duke (John Wayne) was one of the most influential actors of our time...

Harrison Ford is good, Clint Eastwood, Sam Elliott (We Were Soldiers and Sacketts) , Tom Selleck (Quigely Down Under and Sacketts), Mel Gibson was good in Lethal Weapon as well as We Were Soldiers.

I read Louis L'Amour books and like western movies (like a good 'ol northern red neck)

Surprised that I haven't seen Gene Hackman's name on anyones list yet. How about Tommy Lee Jones or George Clooney.

Wow I cannot believe anyone has not mentioned Matthew Lillard in Scooby Doo. He nailed the Shaggy character! It was scary how he was able to bring the cartoon character to life.

Daniel Day Lewis
Johnny Depp
Tom Hanks

Those strike me right off. Daniel Day Lewis always "becomes" his character. He is a really good actor.
