Trade in advice

I am wanting to get out of my 2003 F150 Lariat super cab and into a 2008 F250 SD 4x4 crew cab King Ranch.
I am pretty sure my thoughts on after market equip on the trade in are right, but I want everyone else's opinion too

I have a nice sound system in my F150 (see my signature) but I am inclined to believe that it wont be worth a dime if I trade in. Am I right? If so I will take the subs, seat lift, XM, and head unit out and put the stock 6 disc changer back in and then either keep the head unit, XM tuner, amp and subs or sell them privately (here, Craig's List, eBay, etc). Does the fact that the truck is loaded with a sound system have any value at all on the trade in $amount? Or is the stuff better off in a box in my garage and send the truck on its way with the stock head unit?

Set my mind at ease one way or the other

Personally, i would take it out and sell it privately. It doesn't add any value to your end of the deal.

A dealer won't give you one extra dime for any aftermarket equipment, be it sound gear or anything else. It may even lower the value because the dealer may have to pull it and replace it with stock parts to get the truck resold.

Aftermarket stereos add no value to Blue Book trade in values. Unless they add something that wasnt there before. For example, if you had a single disc player and added a multi, you just increased the value. Granted, the increase is only about $50 so it's not really worth it anyway. Take out the stereo stuff and put it all in your new Superduty. I would.

The dealer won't add anything for the value of that, and I bet ya $20 that one of the detail guys would swap out that sound system...

Well its all back to stock...except for
MB Quarts in the doors instead of the paper cone stock speakers
2008 super duty taillights
2004+ emblems on the fenders and tailgate
black painted grill center
custom exhaust system

I am content to lose those things at no $ gain

Looks like we are going to go talk at a dealer either today or tomorrow. Hopefully next week I will be in a "real" truck!

Why not take out the speakers and the tail lights?

The stock speakers were not in usable condition (one waas ripped around the edges and one was blown so it sounded pretty hellish). The stock 97-03 taillights are in my dads Super Duty because one of his got cracked so he bought them from me and that is why I bought the 08s

So I don't have anything other than the MB Quarts and the 08 Taillights. *shrug* I am not worried about it and someone will get nice speakers and good looking taillights (or someone at the dealership will! hehe).

You're nicer than I am... if it were me, that dealership would be getting some craptastic speakers.

Any pics of the 08 lights?

if you can afford taking the time i would sell the entire truck privately

when i got my new truck, they appraised my old one(97 f150) and were only going to offer me max $3000 on the trade. the sales manager who sold me my new truck told me to sell it privately, he said id be able to get a couple grand more for it. so i ended up selling it to my buddy for $4500. so who knows i probably could of got a few extra bucks for it but whatever still beats the 3g's.

plus if you do it privately you can leave all the after market stuff in the truck and hike the price up a bit more, save you the effort of pulling everything out and selling it by itself.

The only thing about that is that the value of the trade in (not the difference between what you owe and what they give you, just what they give you) comes off the taxable price of the new truck. So it would have had to brought a lot more than what they offered (and gave me) to make up for the tax break. Plus it took me all of an hour and twenty minutes to take everything out and vacuum the floor. It got me in the range of what I was willing to take for it (low in the range, but in the range) and with the X plan I got a nice no haggle price on the new ride. Good day (but long as hell)

Not entirely true... In Missouri (and I'm sure its the same/simliar in other states), there is a form that you can fill out, something about a trade in credit. Basically you sign it and include a bill of sale of your old vehicle, and they deduct that amount from your taxes and send you a refund check. Taxes on my F-250 were originally about $1,000, but because I sold my F-150 I and sent in the form I got a refund of about $560.
