If the girl was trying to do something with it I could understand trying to get it away from her. But, she was just wanting to eat a piece of steak. Come on people, use some common sense. Arresting a 5th grade girl? A little over the top dont you think?

What part of 'Do not bring a knife to school' do you not understand?
If the kid is allowed to slide, guess what will be the standard accessory of every gangbanger in every school across the country?
(ans = a steak in a bag)
My question is, what kind of parents give a kid a steak for a school lunch?
So yeah, what is wrong with us.

I understand not letting the kid have a knife, but calling the cops? She is in 5th grade, probably a 9 or 10 year old kid. Just take it away and call the parents.

I'm right.

School officials say the Ocala 5th grader had brought a piece of steak for her lunch, and had brought a steak knife. According to the report, a couple of teachers took the utensil and called authorities, who arrested the girl and took her to the county’s juvenile assessment center.
#1 - "She did not use it inappropriately. She did not threaten anyone with it. She didn't pull it out and brandish it. Nothing of that nature," explained Marion County School Spokesman Kevin Christian, who added that it made no difference what the knife was being used for, they had no choice but to call police.
"Anytime there's a weapon on campus, yes, we have to report it and we aggressively report it because we don't want to take any chances, regardless," Christian said.
#2 - The girl now faces a felony charge for possessing a weapon on school property and has been suspended from school for 10 days. The parents of the girl could not be reached for comment, WFTV.com reported.

In my 3 year old's previous day care, they weren't allowed to use forks at breakfast becuase of some "accident." We never found out what the "accident" was. He had to eat his breakfast with his fingers. Imagine trying to teach him table manners, when every morning, they did the EXACT OPPOSITE of what we were teaching him.
As to the OP... planning can go a long way. Yes, this is ridiculous that this girl may have to suffer permanent consequences for what amounts to benign ignorance. But in today’s “climate,” perhaps cutting the steak into bite size pieces PRIOR to bring it to school would have been prudent. Having said that, I hope she gets off and nothing comes of this.
