Ipod question

Quick question for the Ipod owners...Do you have to use Itunes to put music on your Ipod or can I use music I already have on my computer for it? I'm getting one for xmas and was going to start downloading stuff to put on it but wanted to make sure first.

itunes is the client/interface that connects to the ipod- if you've got music already on your computer, itunes will import it to an .mp4a, .mp4p file so that it is compatible with the ipod...

Should you choose, you can also retain your music in mp3 audio, you can also rip your CD's as mp3's, but it's not set that way by default. Itunes will however let you convert your ripped CD's that weren't ripped as mp3's to mp3 format, but you cannot convert your m4p files that were purchased from the itunes music store to mp3 via itunes.

I ran into trouble with this. I had dumped about 2K songs into Itunes and then when I went to put them on my wifes MP3 Player, it wouldn't let me. In case anyone is interested, there is a piece of software called Tunebite (you will need the platinum edition, it's like $40) and this will alllow you to take the M4P files in Itunes, convert them to MP3's, legally remove the Licensing Restrictions on each of the songs and allow you to load them onto your MP3 player and listen to them... Just an FYI.

it's a good alternative for those who like to use Itunes on their PC but don't want to go the Ipod route, rather the MP3 Player route.

That is fine and dandy, but how do you get the title of the song to show in Itunes? Everything I have purchased shows the titles, everything from my music on my pc shows as track #1, #2, #3 etc....
Any help?

Right click the song, choose Info, then put in the name. It's a pain, but older files without that info embedded in a way Itunes recognizes won't have it.

Thanks for the info on tunebite! I'll have to check that out. I was mearly pointing out what can be done within Itunes.
