WTF with all the suicides

Last week a girl from my English class last year jumped out of her 8th story dorm at Penn State and died two days later of severe trauma. Then two days ago my buddy calls me from VT and says that a kid from his dorm jumped out the 7th story onto the concrete and died there or at the hospital that night. It is really shocking to hear about all of these things. It makes me really sad to think that this girl in my class would do that. I mean I saw her every day for a year and so did everyone in my English class. I just don't see why people have to resort to suicide as an answer. I hear more and more on the news about suicides with teens involved. I wish these people would reach out for help because there are people out there who really care.

What do you guys really think the big issue is that is pushing more and more teens to resort to death as a way out of situations? It really makes no sense to me as I think life is something to cherish and not to throw away. I have heard of a couple people that were thinking about it but luckily their friends took action and those people are on the road to recovery.

there is a high school near me in Palo Alto where the train tracks run right through campus. It has one of the highest suicide rates of any high school in the country, so many kids jump in front of trains. its quite sad, really.

I blame the parents. They are probably the kind of parents that demand A's from them and the stress of not being able to do that anymore just gets to them so bad they commit suicides. Thats why the suicides happen around same time as mid term and finals. It happens a lot in china, and among the Asian American community too.

Yea I just can't figure out what drives teens to do it. I myself could never ever bring myself to even consider thinking about doing it. I mean how the heck do you even think about purposefully ending your life. Can it really be THAT bad that you have to end it. Why not turn your life around and find something new and maybe help others. Who knows what makes people do such a thing but it just makes me glad in some ways that people are not taking down innocent people with them such as at VT. My high school lost two very successful students in that massacre and it really brought the community together and made people realize what can happen if someone doesn't care about living anymore. It really scares me! I definitely take precautions such as something as simple as keeping my door locked when I'm in my dorm. It just makes me sick to think that not only does someone have the guts to kill themselves, but gets a kick out of taking other people down with them. Personally I would love to help anyone who is thinking of suicide turn their lives around, but if someone is set on suicide, I just really hope they have a heart and spare the lives of people who want to be in this world and who want to love and cherish their lives.

Its cause these teens have been sheltered all of their lives and haven't had any real stressful situations in life. They slip, get a B, freak out, and then get even worse grades...

I highly doubt very many suicides are over grades. But I'm with Zaairman, kids today are spoiled rotten (look at all the 16-18 year olds here with brand new trucks, lifts, rims, etc) and when they run in to tougher times they take the 'easy' way out.

Stress is a poor excuse for taking your own life. Grow up and face challenges, not run from them. I faced stress as a teen with parents nearly breaking up on a monthly basis, facing far more now with a special needs child of my own, bills, schedules, work, etc. If these borderline teens had a crystal ball and looked into the future beyond school, heaven help them.

You want some real stress? Enter the armed forces!

I agree that these teens and young adults need help if they think death is their only option. If they follow thru, however, then death WAS their option. At the same time, though, they also need to realize that there will always be far more to live for than to die over. I may fail at life but I don't fear life. For me, death is not an option.

My motto in life is:There is nothing, I repeat, absolutely nothing worth killing yourself over.

If people knew why other people killed themselves, more of them would still be alive. I think the only safe thing to say is that anyone thinking that irrationally isn't in a right state of mind, with a few possible exceptions.

It's not just younger people doing it, and it doesn't seem to be just stressed out people doing it either.

I tend to think it's like an addiction, but based on some sort of depression for whatever reason. Just like drinking or drugs, they get so deep into it that they lose touch with reality. Unlike drinking and drugs, depression is harder to spot so there is less chance that someone who cares about them can intervene.

Very true! Depression is a very serious thing and I have seen it take down some of the best people. My motto is that if something gets too hard for me to do, either push through it or find a way around it. Don't just stop and give up. College hasn't exactly been easy so far with me having mono the first month of the semester so I basically started out with really really poor grades and now it is just a constant uphill battle because I missed that whole month of info that was the basis for my classes. It sucks but you know if I fail at something I fail at it. Just gotta suck it up and try harder next time. Life is a blast and I can't wait to get home for winter break and go wheelin

Simply put: America is chock full of EMO p*ssies. Let them off themselves, last thing we need is these candy-***** growning up and running for Congress.

ScienceDaily (Sep. 8, 2007) — Following a decline of more than 28 percent, the suicide rate for 10- to-24-year-olds increased by 8 percent, the largest single-year rise in 15 years, according to a report just released in the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's (CDC) Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report (MMWR).

Sing the song children....

Through early morning fog I see
visions of the things to be
the pains that are withheld for me
I realize and I can see...

If I were young and realized that most of my life would be spent paying the price to clean up the mess the current adminstration and congress have left this country and the world in, I'd consider offing myself too.
