If you read the article, they are basing the length of 8' long based on a small part of only the claw. What if it was just a normal size bug with a swollen claw. It would be like finding a toe-nail clipping that was a couple of inches wide and scientists would swear that some 12' tall man is out there when it could only be some guy with a very large toe.
