I use Motorola Phone Tools on the same phone you have and it works great. The two features I like best are txt messaging using your computer and editing mp3s for ringtones. It's not difficult to find.

I've done this with my Verizon Razr V3C. Its very finicky to say the least. Must use the exact same USB port every time. Bitpim is great software. Didnt attempt to use MPT. The USB driver is a modem driver that allows the COM port to access the phone's functions. You can tell that its working when you plug your Razr into the USB port and the phone says "charging". Also allows you to access the web via wireless modem dialing. Not that you want to cuz its so damn slow but you could. Bitpim will allow you to access photos, address book, and ring tones on the Razr. I had to do a seem edit in order to upload mp3s to my phone for ringtones. works great after fooling around with it. Try Howards forums or http://www.hacktherazr.com/guide.seem.edit.html for more info.

I use a Bluetooth adapter to get the pics off my Razr. The software that comes with the adapter is capable of linking it with no additional software.

You need a legit copy of Motorola Phone Tools. I probably downloaded about 10 before I found one that worked. Once you have a good copy you need to update it and you shouldn't have any trouble with it. Mine works like a charm.

When your computer finds it as new hardware it's basically trying to set it up as a modem. It's been over a year since I installed MPTs. I know I had to install one driver but I can't find it right now. I'll keep looking.

Don't need MPT if you get a Bluetooth adapter.
