Bald Eagles
Bald Eagles
I am driving to work today and as i come out of the thick woods and into a just plowed corn field i look up and see a bald eagle. I pull over and get out the bino's and sure enough its a bald eagle. This was very cool to watch as he/she soared above the field. My question is are there bald eagles in southwestern NYS. This eagle was huge white head and end wing feathers. Just wondering..
PS did i say how cool it was to watch..

at my moms house in northern california i was just kicking back outside and my stepsister came over to me and pointed out this bald eagle just chillin in the trees. then it took off and was one of the coolest things i have seen. that was the first time i had seen one in the wild. What an awesome animal.
Seen them several times in California and its always a treat.
Looks like you can find them in all states but Hawaii.
HABITAT & RANGE: Bald Eagles live near large bodies of open water such as lakes, marshes, seacoasts and rivers, where there are plenty of fish to eat and tall trees for nesting and roosting. Bald Eagles have a presence in every U. S. state except Hawaii. Bald Eagles use a specific territory for nesting, winter feeding or a year-round residence. Its natural domain is from Alaska to Baja, California, and from Maine to Florida. Bald Eagles that reside in the northern U. S. and Canada migrate to the warmer southern climates of the U. S. during the winter to obtain easier access to food, especially fish. Some Bald Eagles that reside in the southern U. S. migrate slightly north during the hot summer months.

I'm pretty sure you have Bald Eagles there Jim. They're very rare in a few places but at one time were nationwide. We had a pair flying over our house several times this summer and in Alaska they're thick.
When we lived in Cordova, we were taking a drive one day and I spotted a couple of Bald Eagles in a tree. I had my husband head down a little road close to where they were so I could get some pictures. We got to the tree and I got out of the truck. As I started walking toward the tree a couple more eagles flew out from behind a small hill. So I went over to the hill and started to walk up it, as I was walking up, more and more eagles kept flying out from behind it. When I got to the top of the hill I found out that they were feasting on some dead animals someone had dumped back there. All in all there must have been 20-30 eagles behind that hill, it was an awesome sight!

Several years ago, I was varmit shooting in the hills east of Milpitas, Ca. I had just shot a ground squirrel, and was waiting for more to stick their heads up, when I looked up and saw a bald eagle pull his wings in and do a full on dive down and grab the squirrel I had just shot. It was very impressive to watch! For the rest of the weekend we'd say "Let's go feed the eagles" when we were headed out to shoot.

One of the coolest things I ever saw and eagle do was when we lived in Westport, WA. We were down by the Harbor watching the boats and such, there were some sea gulls flying around out there, as there always are. We watched a sea gull dive down and catch a fish, just as he was getting airborne again, he was dive bombed by an eagle! Man was that something to see!! The eagle didn't catch him, just knocked him out of the sky and took his fish! Totally cool!!!

Can't see why not...we have a few in Texas.
we have a good population of them too. especially when all the geese migrate(sp) to the Squaw Creek Game Refugee about 30mins. s.w. of me. Squaw Creek has what they call Eagle Days every year. those things are pretty amazing up close.
