Earthquake!

My house just shook, phones are off. If you have loved ones in the San Jose/Fremont area check on'em. I don't know how big a 5.6 is but I know it's not a small one. It happened about 5 minutes ago. I have a friend who was in a restaurant and all the windows shattered, they all ran out into the street. Hopefully it's not too bad.

I'm glad to hear you're OK, my prayers will be with those who aren't.

I was in the Bay area when the 1989 Loma Prieta quake hit. It was at least a week before I could get a line to call out of the state to let my family know everything was OK. Pretty scary stuff, glad I don't live there anymore!

JJ,

It was a 5.6. That's nothing!

Try a 7.5! That's what I get for living RIGHT on the San Andreas fault line though. Oh well.

Glad you're OK.

Well I've been watching the news, there is little damage, wasn't bad but it's big news here the news and locals wont shutup. Mtn-rose, they won't stop talking about the 89 one on the news! I feel for you if you had to go through that, they're showing pictures of that right now. Chris, if we feel anything here in the valley we get excited, I'm excited.

It was bad, fortunately we lived in Novato, which is quite a ways north of the epicenter. While it rattled and shook everything in the house, the only thing that happened at our place was 2 tall candles I had on a shelf fell off on the floor and most of the pictures were slightly crooked on the wall. The freeway that collapsed was one that my husband traveled every day to work and back when his ship was in port, thank God he was underway at the time!

Do houses in CA have a lot of foundation issues due to all of the earthquakes they undergo?

And...glad you're ok hope everyone else is as well.

actually most buildings in California have excellent foundations for earthquakes. the 89 quake did not destroy many buildings outside of the freeways, bridges and other pure concrete structures.

I lived in the Bay Area most my life. Trust me, a 5.6 feels plenty strong when your are right on top of it.

The '89 Loma Prieta quake nearly knocked me off my feet and I was a long way from the center (out in Antioch that day, far east bay). My sister was driving on the freeway in Oakland at the time and she said the front of her car started bouncing up and down - So bad, she thought she was getting air under her front tires as she slowed down to a stop along with everyone else. She had just gone through the Cypress strucutre (the section that collapsed) about 5 minutes earlier.

One of the things about a quake is when you feel it, you don't know how far away it was and how bad it got elsewhere.

yeah, but where else can you snowboard/ski, rock climb, hunt, fish, visit the city, visit the boonies, climb a 14,000 foot peak, cruise the hottest desert and go to the beach all in the same state?? oh yeah, no road salt either
