I tried everything that was suggested and nothing worked. So I just set up a new user account and transferred everything to this new user. Everything works fine with the new one and I just won't use the old one. Thanks everybody! This forum was more help than the microsoft forum.

Hey. Good luck, bro - yeah, these folks are great - I'm humbled, actually.

If you ever do find the answer, could you please let us know? thanks!

By the way, if you happened to press F7 while listening or while WMP is running, that is mute, and it only mutes WMP, nothing else. Check the main menu PLAY and volume to se if mute is checked.

The sound would work with avi and mpeg files.

Double click on your volume control. This will bring up the types of files you can mute. You can mute just certain types. It too would be a different setup for each user.
