Ferries and BC bud
Ferries and BC bud
Full story
They hit an island yet there's no evidence that they were high. If two people wouldn't have died I would have said this was hilarious, instead it's just very sad. Granted we don't know if the bridge crew was even part of the ones admitting to smoking but it doesn't look good either way.
Ferries boss wants mandatory drug testing:
Safety board says some Queen of the North crew smoked marijuana on the vessel; no evidence that bridge crew was impaired by drugs when ferry sank

As part of its investigation into the Queen of the North sinking in March 2006 - 99 passengers and crew were rescued and two passengers died - the Transportation Safety Board found crew members admitted that they "regularly smoked cannabis between shifts, both on board and off the vessel

You're right. It would have been really funny if no one got hurt. As it is... Anyone who drives a class 8 commercial vehicle is subject to random drug testing. I would think marine transports could be included.

In Canada there is no across the board random drug testing for any industry. Might infringe on our "rights". There are a few companies that do it but not many that I know of. At the last shop I worked they even hired one guy that failed his pre-employment drug test twice. Not sure why they even bothered with the screening if they hired him anyways.
In the US not only are transport drivers subject to random testing but also mechanics. At least it was that way at the companies I worked for. It was always my understanding that in the US, any company that is involved in any aspect of transportation (air, sea and land) must have a random testing program in place that includes drivers, mechanics, service managers, dispatchers, etc.

You plowed a ferry into a dock, sandbar, whatever?.. Then you did it, what difference does it make if you smoked a joint 20 days ago, or even 1 hour ago? You were negligent, killed people, damaged property.. go to jail..
Unimpaired idiots do the same thing all the time.. unless they give drug tests immediately prior to turning over the helm, wheel... what difference does it make?
