Children should be dealt with on an individual basis. Some need spanking, others never do. Depends on the nature. There are those that no matter how much spanking, you never get through to them and they should be dealt with differently as well. What you are trying to do is communicate with disciplne, so you need to use whatever communication works in the instance. Also, I do not think spanking or striking a child in public is ever warranted. It should be a private matter.

 

You're a frickin' moron if you think that any 9-year old kid deserves to be punched in the face.

Otherwise, you are probably just trying to stir the pot as always.

There is a gray line between corporal punishment and abuse. However, smashing a kid in the face like that is clear cut abuse. The way some brats act these days, maybe there should be more spanking.

 

i'd say you done the right thing. myself i would not have been able to keep my cool..and would have givin' the p.o.s a good ol' fashion hillybilly *** whippin'. then i'd been the one in cuffs. but you handled it well.

 

That is sad. I can't imagine anyone treating a kid that way.....especially their own.

I was at Wal-Mart a few weeks ago with the wife and I overheard this guy tell his son (looked like he was 6 or 7) "if you don't stop that, I'm going to kick you in the face". I thougt to myself there is the next bully in the making thanks to his dad.

You have to remember that for some kids, if you wait till later, to make it a private matter, you lose the effect. The kid wont remember their deed very well depending on their age. I am not saying to wail on the little one but a quick attention-getting pop on the butt and a quick talking-down to and you get the point across. I give my son a little pop on the butt when he gets out of control, but never hard enough to leave a mark, just to get his attention. One pop with the right tone of voice afterwards can do wonders without going further and risk true abuse.

Oh, BTW, as a kid, I was spanked by hands, belts, paint mixers, paddles made from wood or plastic or fiberglass(double ouch!!), hickory sticks, rulers, ummmmmm.......maybe more. I wasnt a bad kid but I got caught alot and I had a lil nark for a sister!! Turned out ok, never felt like bullying others, nor ever spent a sec in jail, never smoked anything or drunk alcohol either. But I got alot of whoopin's as a kid, but never, ever, was I abused.

 

Yes, spanking is Ok. There is a difference between discipline and abuse. If you can't separate the two then you shouldn't spank either. Never spank out of anger. Just use it as an attention getter. Open hand, no weapons. My mom used the wooden spoon. Damn that hurt. I usually deserved it though. I was a wise ***.

Thats a terrible story I actually wish I never read it I cant even imagine what it was like to see that. You and your father did a great thing by getting involved.

"If" i spanked my kids, it would be at home in their room or in a place away from the general public. public spanking is asking for trouble. before you talk tough just remeber they can remove a child from your home.

 

If that was me i would have lost it and smashed the guy out and say how do u like it.

I dont know, I would have either been in so much shock that I'd just stood there with my mouth wide open for 30 mins... or I'd completely lost it and wouldn't have been able to tell you what happened in the :22 seconds it would take me to jump off the scafolding from the second or third floor and reach him.

 

I got my butt whipped plenty of times. In public, at home, church it didn't matter. If I stepped out of line I got my butt popped. Usually it was at the hand of my mother. Or wooden spoon, paddle, switch. I learned after a while not to do the things that got me a spanking. If I mouthed off my mother, I got my mouth popped. It never even came close to child abuse or this story.

My children will be raised the same way.
