2001 Explorer ball joints

Is there anyone out there that knows how to tell if the ball joints are replaceable. This is a 2wd sport. I didn't know these things even existed. I don't want to order an extra $300 in part if they are not needed.

Lower ones are uppers are not, from the facotry anyway. You have to replace the entire upper arm, then the new aftermarket will have replaceable and servicable ball joints. Best way to tell if it has been changed is if it has a grease zert. If it doesn't then it's a factory non serviceable and non replaceable.

Go with Moog, we did my wifes a couple of years ago and they were only $50 a side if memory serves me. And Moog is stronger than the factory control arm and ball joint and then the ball joint will then be serviceable and changeable.

Not all greasable ball joints are replacable. In general, on teh Explorers, the lowers are just the joint, the uppers are a part of the entire control arm assembly. Also, most of the companies have done away with the OEM 2-piece passenger side upper control arm in favor of a 1-piece upper arm (a mirror image of the driver's side).

Now, that being said, Moog makes both a 2-piece outer half and a 1-piece upper control arm for the passenger side. Moog's joints are replacable once you've installed their upper control arm components. They'll cost you a little more up front, but save you money (and labor) in the long run.

I just did mine last weekend.

I was actually looking for a snap ring and didn't see one. That was why I asked. This thing should be pretty simple since it is 2wd. Thanks guys.

Nope they are pressed in and you cant buy just the joints to have them pressed out and new ones pressed back in.

With 111K on em, it probably wouldn't hurt. I do know that I need a new tie rod end cause one of mine has a tear in the boot.
