Hunting info

I live in Texas, Houston to be exact, and was considering hunting as a hobby. Small game Quail, Dove would be cheaper I assume, but I also think Deer hunting would be fun. I grew up around Firearms and have a couple target pistols myself, I also own an ATV and all camping gear. With all these tools at my disposal I figured I'm partway there. What is all involved financially for hunting in Texas. Where should I start?

i'd start with making friends with someone who hunts and hopefully he/she has land or at least access to land

financially, if you have access to land, it's just your license and hunter's safety course...if you get serious with deer hunting, you might pay to get on a lease, which can be quite expensive

it's lots of fun regardless of the game--good luck

It's mostly Crown land up here. Get your licence and tags for the area and know the regs specifically for that area. Good to go. A lot of Yanks come up here to shoot down anything that moves

Scott, I would start out hunting duck or geese. Living in Houston gives you access to some of the best hunting around. The coastal waterways attract huge numbers of these birds. Honestly, I know nothing about where to hunt them, but I know you can hunt public lands around the coast. I wouldnt mind helping you do the research. I come to Houston quite often and wouldnt mind baggin' a few birds for Christmas.

How old are you? You may not have to take the safety course if youre grandfathered. I am 37, did not need it. My b-inlaw is 30. Hes supposed to take it.

Oh yeah, I used to make fun of guys wearing camo for everyday cloths. Once you are hooked, you wont give a *****te. Especially if you pay out the a$$ for a gore-tex jacket.

We Texans dont pay state tax...another way to steal our coin.

If your looking to shoot mainly gamebirds check out the TPWD website.. They have deals with landowners all over the state, with maps online, that allow access to some very nice hunting.. for free..

Deer hunting is another story, gonna have to pay for that unless you know a landowner.. There are public lands mostly in east Texas, but I've heard that it can be pretty crowded in those...

But for birds, you caint beat the TPWD thing.. I've had excellent luck, and a ton of fun hitting some of those.. There's usually a box at those sites asking you to write down where you came from, how many birds you took, your general impression.. All in all it's a great thing for hunting in Texas..

Yeah im 26, but if I have to take a saftey course I wouldnt mind. Id like to get the ball rolling as a bird intime for the holidays does sound pretty good. My father has quite a gun collection and has been beging me to take some of them off his hands for years, so Im sure he would be happy to unload a shotgun my way. Any idea what syle shotgun is best?
