Retail Workers

This is a serious thread, please dont ruin it for me.

I have an english paper to write, it is a classification paper, so i need to "interview" people. So if you work in retail, management or not, i need your input.

Why did you originally start working for your company?

What keeps you going to work day to day?

Do you enjoy the people you work with?

Do you enjoy the environment you work in?

Do you enjoy serving the customers that shop in your store?

If you have any other relevant suggestions or thoughts please feel free to tell me.

I work at West Marine, and I started work there because I love the boating world, and the discount employees get.

Knowing that I help people, and I actually like my job.

The people I work with are just like family to me.

The work environment is great.

The people that shop there I know mostly by name. I know what they have and what they want. I enjoy helping them out and showing them what they need or want.

I started working at the store for 2 reasons. One: it's close to my home, a 3 mile commute verses a 14 mile commute to town. Two: it's a small store with a small employee base, I thought it would afford a closer working environment than I would get from a big company.

What keeps me there is the scarceness of jobs in the area, the knowledge that if I quit it would put my employers in a desperate situation as we are already short handed and I like the boss, co-workers and regular customers.

The people I work with and for are wonderful. I have become very close to them in the 16 months I have worked there.

The job itself is just work, not much fun but the boss, co-workers and regulars make it a great environment.

We have a lot of regulars that are great to talk to and joke around with. Some of those just passing through can be a bit of a pain but for the most part the people who come in are decent enough.

M'kay... Well..

Why did you originally start working for your company?
Cause I need money. Duh. The restaurant I now work for is family owned and run, so my schedule is very flexible (ie, I've got a test Tuesday and need off ASAP). I was referred there by a friend.

What keeps you going to work day to day?
I've got a truck payment to make. I'm supporting myself through college. It also helps me get my mind off school.

Do you enjoy the people you work with?
Yes, very much so, including the management.

Do you enjoy the environment you work in?
Yes. It keeps me moving.

Do you enjoy serving the customers that shop in your store?
Usually. Everybody knows that there are always some people that you just cannot please.

Why did you originally start working for your company?

Needed money when I was in high school. I've worked my way up since into the retail end of the business and have become quite successful.

What keeps you going to work day to day?

Money. Plain and simple that's why I work. I do enjoy working, yes, but I'd rather be paid to fish than do this. Realize that I couldn't ever be a great enough fisherman to support myself let alone others though.

Do you enjoy the people you work with?

Some, yes. Others, no. I've been told that you shouldn't become friends with co-workers on a personal level - that it's more stressful and crap. I've acutally become really good friends with one co-worker (and to top it off he's dating a great gal-friend from my old high school!). So in a nutshell, yeah... they're not too bad.

Do you enjoy the environment you work in?

Yes. Otherwise I wouldn't be here. It's a clean, pretty fun atmosphere.

Do you enjoy serving the customers that shop in your store?

Yes and no. I enjoy helping people. I do not like to help those that are a pita to me. Some people are soooo stupid somedays that I just wish I was at home sleeping. But, generally, I do enjoy serving them.

If you have any other relevant suggestions or thoughts please feel free to tell me.
I hope this helps Pat. GL!

bass pro employee

Why did you originally start working for your company?
I work at BASS PRO, in the hunting dept. in maryland, I started working there because it is right between home and school and very convenient. I go to class in the mornings/afternoon and go straight to work till 1030. I am an outdoors person and I wanted to work at a place of common interest with people that like the outdoors...and oh yeh the discounts are sweet!

What keeps you going to work day to day?

Knowing that I am helping people, the fact that I am making money (poor college student haha) and my gf works there too so it's more time i can see her! The discounts are also another big reason, it's going to be tough to quit!
Do you enjoy the people you work with?
I enjoy most people I work with. A lot of the guys my age are pretty worthless, they stand around and do nothing. They know their stuff but there is no work ethic in some of the younger guys. I get along better with the people my age (21 and older). The older guys like what they do and actually work! If the younger guys would just work it would be a lot more fun.
Do you enjoy the environment you work in?
I enjoy working there because its a place i fit in, i love the outdoors, hunting, fishing, camping etc. The people that come in are mostly outdoors people and its nice to have a conversation with someone about the great outdoors and hearing everyones hunting stories. It is hard to not have fun working there. It's a great environment if you're an outdoors person.
Do you enjoy serving the customers that shop in your store?
I enjoy most customers, but a lot of them are real d*cks. We get a lot of people that come in the day before opening day of bow or gun season expecting to buy a new bow/set it up, or buy a new gun and have us mount thier scopes. They complain about linee, waiting and if we are out of a certain item etc. It gets annoying when people yell at you when it's thier fault they waited till the last minute. But a lot of customers are great and understand that it is a busy place. I enjoy the customers that will sit there and talk to you and understand that you are not a gun encyclopedia and don't give you crap cause they had to wait over 10minutes. I think if people just put thier selves in a retail employees positon they wouldn't act like an A** if something didn't go thier way. I wouldn't go to thier job and act like that!

ok sorry if thats too long but I'd figure I'd help ya out before i started my own homework.

btw pat.. this is real info.

Why did you originally start working for your company?

I decided that working at a coffee shop wasnt cutting it for me. I needed something better so I started my tree planting business. I have a LOT of people around where I live that have land so I go around.. (Currently have 3) and find people with trees and pay them 5$ per tree.. I go out there. dig them up.. tie them and get in back of my truck. I take the tree's around new neighborhoods being built (usually have 5-10 trees) and knock on doors... I started it this summer and am REALLY doing well. What I use to make in 2 weeks I can make in 2 days. I first put flyers on doors that didnt awnser.. then ended up putting them on every door. I Give a 1 year warrenty on the tree for anything like fungus or sickness that happens. I also give the people watering instructions and all. My sales pitch is I call it the "take away" technique. I put a few red ribbons on the best looking trees and tell the customer that is looking at them in back of my truck that those are already sold.. They reply, hey.. I want that tree.. So I sell for extra 30$ and tehy can have it. . I've been doing really well.. I also found online a secret formula and how do plant the trees so they will grow 2x faster than any miracle grow crap you buy in the store. but if like a tornado or flood or something kills the tree, I wont replace for free.
What keeps you going to work day to day?

well.. only reason now I am working is to pay for car insurence and to pay for gas.. but I can easily pay those off in 2 days/month.. I have about 10 new subdivisions being built, built around me and almost every yard has no tree's. I figure its pretty easy money and not to mention added perk I lost about 15 pounds this summer and bulked up a lot from digging. HARD WORK.

Do you enjoy the people you work with?

not yet gone to home depot or anything to hire pedro and jesus and juan to help me. but maybe someday I will who knows..

Do you enjoy the environment you work in?

Oh yah. Love it.

Do you enjoy serving the customers that shop in your store?

well not store but house.. I love it.. except for this 1 lady that called me 2 weeks later about her tree.. SHE NEVER WATERED IT. I was like "what the heck...." I gave her instruction to water the oak for 25 mins every day and she never watered it once.. she said it RAINED... like freakin once all the time she had it. idiots.

If you have any other relevant suggestions or thoughts please feel free to tell me.

I found something that I like and I have to go write my jospeh stalin paper now

Why did you originally start working for your company?

Because the place I worked before went to hell in a handbasket. I initially got into retail atuo/truck/SUV sales because I have always been very good with people and thought for sure I could make a good living doing it.

What keeps you going to work day to day?

The variety. I never know whats gonna happen from day to day, but I do know I'll make some money and get to meet all kinds of interesting people.

Do you enjoy the people you work with?

Yes, the work environment is very homely and family like. I love everyone I work with.

Do you enjoy the environment you work in?

Yes, it's very laid back and relaxed. We're given the freedom to do pretty much whatever we want without being babysat, as long as we produce results.

Do you enjoy serving the customers that shop in your store?

Sometimes. Some of them are complete idiots, and I love some of the others.

If you have any other relevant suggestions or thoughts please feel free to tell me.
