If I'm going to spend the kind of money Sony wants for a laptop, I'll get a Thinkpad instead. Sonys are loaded to the gills with proprietary crapware and their support is lousy.

I have an older Vaio, and it's been great. It tends to run a little hot though, to where it'll bog down and act stupid after running for hours on end. I bought one of those cool pad things with the fans in it, and it helped a lot. My Vaio's been a lot better than my Dell, and my next laptop will be another Vaio.

ETA - If there is one other drawback, it's battery life. I'll get maybe an hour, hour and a half tops on the battery in mine with 2.8 gig P4. My Dell will go at least twice as long, if not longer on a single charge. My Vaio is a battery sucking SOB.

I don't doubt it's reliable, it is a well constructed machine - but have you ever tried to get support for it?

I haven't needed support for it in over four years. That's what I'd rather have, something that I don't need to worry about the quality of customer support.

I've just about given up on customer support overall with all PC brands after my crummy experience with Dell. Next time something breaks, I'll pay a local guy to fix it, or get some books and try to fix it myself.

Is Sony offering recovery media yet? The ones I've seen only have a recovery partition and no way to get or make disks in case the hard drive craps.

Another vote for Vaio. I've got a desktop as well as a notebook with no problems knock on wood. The desktop is four years old. The laptop is about two years old. No problems.

How long have you had that Dell? We're ready to get a new one for work and I was looking at the Latitude due to the fact you can still get it with XP.

I'm not mSaLL, but my work laptop is a Latitude. Overall, it works alright, fast, battery life is pretty good. The finish sucks, if that matters to you, and I've had mine for a little over a year now and the display hinges are a little loose.

Above all else, the customer service is absolutely abysmal. Horrible, unacceptable, **** poor, I can't think of enough names to call Dell's customer service.
